The diagrams I've seen show the Harman vf-3000 to be 55 inches tall. They also call for 24 inches clearance between the top of the unit and the ceiling, which brings my height to 79 inches. Is this 24 inches critical? My basement is only 6 feet high, and I don't want to have to dog it out if I don't have to.

I was thinking of digging a pit in my basement! Basement is only 64" tall.
Then I found my little Keystoker! :D

The plate on the stove say 18" all the way around, that is what I would go by. It's an issue to the inspector only. Being a boiler the fire is surrounded by 1/4 steel and a column of water. the boiler never gets hotter then the water inside, 160-200 degrees. I guess the concern could be stove pipe or hopper in the case of a hopper fire, yet hopper fires are very rare on Harman because of the vertiflow feeder. The vertifow pushes coal up to the fire making it harder to burn backwards and down.

I know the manual says 24" inches clearance but that manual has a number of other error an omissions as well.
