Hi! My husband and I currently burn wood but are switching to coal. We are looking at an Alaska Kast console coal stoker that is 5 years old and selling for $900. We live in a 175 year old log house that is getting close to being insulated well. we have grates in our floors that allows heat into our bedrooms.our house is 1500 square feet. the wood is getting to be too much because you have to stay on top off it all day and it runs out at night. the coal would be our only heat. Anyway, what I want to ask is,is the price for that type of stove good? I believe it will do the job heating our house. it will be in the dining room where the wood stove was and the heat from that at least made it to all the rooms. thanks!

I guess it would depend on the BTU's, what the going rate is for a new one and what kind of shape it's in. If it was taken care of it's just getting broken in. :)

its 5,000 to 85,000 btu, I don't know what the going rate is for a new one,I'm trying to find that out. I will see what shape its in when we go see it,we've only seen pics so far.

The stove would cost $2000 to $2200 before some of the common appearance options. At five years old, check the condition of the gaskets to prevent leaks.

I have a Kast Console I bought last year used..mine is a 1990 model...was called a Kodiak then I believe...but it is a nice stove..does the job well....I use it for the beginning of the winter as it is in the family room on the Hearth...mine is a bottom vent and is vented into fireplace flue with stainless flexible flue pipe...when the colder weather comes I use the Harman in the basement to heat house and basement....

yes new they are close to 2200 now....I got the sales slip when I bought mine used..and back then It was close to 1400 or 1600..I forget now..that was 1990 price...

also...if it is 5 years old now...I would do a gasket change...not much to it..the doors and the feed chute where it comes in to the stove from the back...very easy to do....

if you buy it..enjoy is a nice stove and simple to use...OH..make sure it comes with the rheostat..motor control ..little black box..with a knob on controls feed and blowers...if that model has it....I think the newer model did away with is built in....
