I don't think HTTPS wpould protect against that either, the data is not encrypted until you hit submit as far as I know...

Exactly. The act of typing emits a signal from the key board that can be picked up right through the air. Not only that, but the monitor itself emits signals. The electron guns in the monitor shoot the pulses toward the phosphor on the screen and THOSE signals can be picked up. The way they stop this is to line the keyboard and line the monitor with copper and cover the screen with copper impregnated glass. This glass is not cheap! Of course this stops all air flow so fans are installed on the monitor for cooling. The bottom line is, unless you have a copper lined system, no software on Earth can stop someone with the right equipment from seeing what you type.

The electromagnetic radiation from electronic devices are a well know phenomena. To electronics engineers it's known as "TEMPEST' criteria. The term TEMPEST was coined by NSA and has stuck even in the unclassified design world. Depending on what side you are on, you are either trying to prevent electromagnetic radiation from your equipment or trying to detect it from the "bad guys" equipment. A lot of unclassified information about TEMPEST is here:

In my career I've done a lot of designs on both sides of the fence. Nothing secret about the basic engineering design principles. What is highly classified is the specific susceptibility of military equipment.

Every computer room I've ever helped build (military AND civilian) included a gridwork of copper to lower EMR emmissions.
