Finally tried Anthracite in my Hitzer 254

Finally tried Anthracite in my Hitzer 254

PostBy: CHICKENBOY On: Tue Mar 10, 2009 7:55 am

I've had this stove in my hunting camp for 8 years, its basically my main source of heat. Until I stumbled upon this site a month ago I only ever burned wood in the unit and had very good results, so I thought. As my wood pile has dwindled this year with the many below zero spells, and after much reading on this adicting site, I couldn't wait to try coal. All I can say is wow :D .. My camp is 20' x 32', two stories, conventional framed and insulated, inside is drywall and rough hemlock. Front half has 16' ceiling with a loft, back half is two 8' ceilings and basic drywall. Had it up to 79* - 80* with windows open this past weekend, granted it was in the upper 50's out, but it worked great. Solves the question on where I'm getting more firewood. Here is a couple pics if your interested.

Nice photos glad you gave coal a try, your opinion was WOW, that was my feeling 20 years ago when we tried coal. Now is the trick to see "HOW LOW CAN YOU GO" without loosing the fire on warm days. We had our new Hitzer down to the low 200's over last weekend.

Good Luck nice camp.

DVC,
That's actually stainless and 2- layers of drywall behind it. It never gets more than warm to the touch. Stone would be nice also, probably safer too.

CHICKENBOY __ Camp looks very comfortable, our camp is in NE Westmoreland Co. Good photos, I didn't see
a barmetric damper; if you going to catch the affliction (hobby?) of coal burning you may wish to add one.
Best Regards, baldeagle

Baldeagle,

Ya, I've been reading and asking about a baro. I've got nothing against them, just haven't got to it yet. Do you think it would really be worth it when I'm only there for two days at a time?

CHICKENBOY _ I doubt it, we do not have one at our farm ... but like you only there from Sat. am 'till Sunday
afternoons - we can idle the H 503 at home easily for that but from Friday till Sunday is likely a restart.
