HITZER design... Good/bad ???

PostBy: RMA On: Sat Mar 14, 2009 2:19 pm

While doing a little due diligence I came across this video:

This link is broken, either the page no longer exists or there is some other issue like a typo.

The ash pan looks far too shallow(small) and you only need two people to
perform this operation...There's got to be a better way!

Pan works just fine in the 503!
Holds the whole shakedown.
We just empty it outside, one person job!
The video shows a rather labor intensive way to empty the pan!

This pan appears to hold ashes from a single load. It seems that many other stoves hold a few days' ashes. So you empty, perhaps, two days a week rather than seven...No?
And yes I agree dumping the ashes is more sensible than "scooping" in the house...

Wouldn`t hurt to have another ash pan. And that goes with any stove.

In the dead of winter - working the stove hard - I have to empty the ash pan from my 503 once a day. Not a big deal. Yes - two ash pans are a must for convienence sake.

My Hitzer 503 is great. You get a hot fire ,shake it down, pull the ash pan, sprits and dump outside. Easy!!!
Twice a day in cold weather.

I would like to see the ash pan a little deeper. However I don't see the need for a second ash pan. I carry mine out to the garage and dump it in a large wash pan. Then I bring the ash pan back in and slide it back in the stove. The open end of the pan is nice because it scoops up any ash that lays in the bottom. With my wood stove I had to shovel spilled ash out of the stove bottom and put it in the pan. One advantage of the pan not being too big is that I can carry it with one hand and use the other hand to close the ash door and open the house and garage door as I carry out.

One person and one pan are all that is needed. Works well. I empty every day to day and a half. :)

Afternoon All! -- We are somewhat different, we also bought the Hitzer ash tote. It is matched to the
size of the 503. AFTER the ashes are cool, (b/4 next shake) we just slide the ashes into the tote - it sits
in the living room a couple feet from the 503. Tote needs to be dumped out 2-3 times/week. That is messy!

Don't go by the video. That guy doesn't have a clue! Look at the mess around and all over his stove. Watching the video, how long do you think it takes him to tend his stove? I have the same stove he does. My stove tending is done before he gets the front door open. And that's by myself, with no mess.
