After trying to remove the virus (my other post), now my USB doesn't work. If my USB keyboard is plugged in, I can hit delete before windows starts and get into the bios. The USB keyboard works to navigate through the bios setup in my Intel D865Gsa motherboard. Then when windows boots to the password screen, no response from my USB keyboard and USB mouse. If I restart with PS/2 keyboard and mouse, they work.
I reinstalled the motherboard drivers. I went into device manager and the USB controllers say they are working. All the USB stuff is enabled in the motherboard bios.
Should I remove the keyboard and mouse in the device manager and try to reboot with the USB keyboard and mouse? I also need to use a USB port for my camera.
I wonder what happened.

Have you been backing up regularly?

Sometimes wiping the disk and doing a fresh install is your best bet after a virus.

Thanks,
I think it's a good idea to reinstall totally. After everything I stumbled through; there was a couple error notices when I reinstalled, Windows was looking for some file it couldn't find so I had to skip it, etc. I have no idea how to get my usb ports back.

I wish, nothing wrong under Universal Serial Bus controllers! It shows 5 USB Universal Host Controllers and 4 USB Root Hub.

My camera doesn't show up, it always has, so my USB ports seem to be unknown to whatever recognizes them or runs them.
I don't know enough to know what to do next. I think this happened when I reinstalled XP (repair option from XP cd) ,or one of the service packs.

I want my optical mouse back and my usb keyboard. I can always wipe the drive and reinstall XP, I would really like to figure out how to fix this though.

If you have everything you need backed up just cut your losses and do a reformat. Your machine will be nice and clean and faster too. I usually do mine once a year just to get rid of the crap that sticks the inside of the machine.

If you don't have your stuff backed up and are planning on doing it now, be very careful on any reinstalls so that you don't reinfect your machine. Scan scan scan every disc or flash drive preferably on a removable drive.

Thanks very much!
I went to those USB controllers in Device Manager and uninstalled them all. Nothing to lose. On reboot, Windows found them all and reinstalled the drivers. Now it sees my camera, usb mouse and a usb keyboard I have. It wouldnt see my old keyboard, but that Keytronics keyboard came with its own drivers so that might be it.
I think it is a good idea to reinstall totally, maybe wipe info and then reformat. I just have two little old 20gig Maxtors in this pc.
I have everything to build a better pc anyway, but want this one too.

What a great site this is, coal knowledge, heated discussions, and tech support!!

Skinny it down. Try unplugging all usb devices when shut down, then reboot w/ps2 key board. After windows loads, plug usb devices back one at a time. I have this problem once in a while and this resolves it (but**). Are you using a usb hub, add-on usb card or right to the mb? **My pc is 8 yr old, runs XP but has some newer parts installed 3+ years ago. The hub eventually failed as well as the usb 2.0 card I installed. These aren't very expensive so they were easy to replace.
Before reloading anything, I try a restore point from a few days before the problem appeared. Good luck!

4 USB ports right at the back of the mb. I think this happened as a result of my less than expert surgery. What kind of a talented programmer would create malicious software just to cause people grief! Maybe the anti-virus software companies do it to generate business.

Something to try. New motherboards always have power to them unless you pull the cord. Shutdown the computer and pull out the power cord. With the power cord out, hit the power button a few times to drain the capacitors. Wait a few minutes. Plug the power back in and power the computer back up. Sometimes you need to fully de-power the system to reset some of the hardware. This has reset the onboard USB hardware a few times for me.

Typical Windows!
Whack and let Windows find it again!

My brother has been a Mac user for years. They are very cool computers. Sometimes I think Bill Gates is just a ruthless greedy evil businessman. He has me trained well, I was scared there would be a fine or jail sentence when I re-registered my copy of XP...
But considering the amazing complicated technology I don't have too many complaints. My friend's pc finally malfunctioned, probably due to a surge, and she wanted a new pc fast. I could have built her a new one, but she wanted one right now, better I keep out of it anyway. I went to Best Buy with her and she got a basic HP with Vista installed, filled up with not much software and a lot of pop ups to buy this and buy that, she loses her mouse cursor three times a week!
