Hi Paul. Do you have a barometric damper on the vent pipe? If not, that heat is going up the stack. Do a search in the Venting Section on barometric dampers.

If your wood stove heated your house fine, so will a coal stove. Is your stove filled with coal? (filled to the top of the firebrick?) Sometimes it may take a day or so for your basement to warm up enough to send heat upstairs, but if a wood stove worked, so will coal. Heat is heat!

Hi Paul

Heating a 1,000 sq feet whit this stove should be easy after you get accustom to your stove and chimney. Is there exposed masonry walls in the basement? They will suck up a lot of heat but if the wood stove was at the same location, it shouldn't be an issue for this stove unless the wood stove output was greater than 50,000 BTU/hr..

I've been heating 3,100 sq ft of living quarters, above the basement, for the past seven years with the same model. I constantly run 600-700 when temps are below 40F and 400 - 500 above 45F. Below are links to several other threads that have a lot of information about this stove model. Take time to read through them and, if you have time, watch the videos linked through my signature block below. Be sure that you have good quality coal because trying to burn bad coal can really confuse the process. If you doubt the quality of the coal or if it's the right size for your chimney/stove configuration, try a half dozen or more bags of another brand or from another supplier.

Let us knwo if you have any sucess or, especially, if you have any questions.

If you're still here Paul......Stick with it! Your stove is fine & it's just a matter of getting things to run correctly. I'll bet by next year at this time you'll wonder what all the trouble was?!?!
