Would you know what to do?

Would you know what to do?

PostBy: billlindley On: Thu Mar 26, 2009 8:03 am

So the other day I was heading to a friends house in Fleetwood driving on 422 near the Limerick power plant. I like to think I am alert and aware of my surroundings when I drive so I pick up on things. I saw a car in front of me with out of state tags and didn’t think much of it until I saw who was in the car. There were 4 middle eastern men one of which had a video camera videoing in the direction of the Limerick powerplant. I followed them and sure enough they got off at the Limerick exit. I don’t know if anyone else drives that stretch of road between the Collegeville and Limerick exit of 422 but if you do you know there is nothing you would really want to video.

So I got a little concerned and thought it was my duty to call and report this suspicious activity. My only problem was who do you call? I thought 911 but it wasn’t really an emergency probably just a paranoid delusion but I kept thinking what if. Luckily my girlfriend remembered a dispatch # she was given back in high school and amazingly enough it worked. I was able to make a call to the dispatch office and report it. Lord knows if anything happened from it and it was probably nothing but it looked suspicious. I understand they really couldn’t create huge disaster from attacking a powerplant but it’s probably a high impact target in the terrorist world due to the mental torment it would cause the country.

Would anyone else know who to call in that situation? Would you even attempt to call or do you think I am just a paranoid person?

You did the right thing, and no I wouldn't have a clue who to call in a similar situation.

It does sound like something that should be looked into & I hope you wrote down the tag numbers. I would suggest you call your local FBI office........ but:

1. Be aware that most law enforcement offices are literally swamped with such tips & chances are nothing will be done.
2. How did you ascertain that the men were middle eastern ? (they may have just been contractors for some road/infrastructure work in the area)
3. There are way to many innocent possibilities for any LEO to divert manpower from real investigations to chase down every tip.

I did give them the make/model/color and tag #. The tag was out of state, very far out of state and I coudl tell thier were middel eastern by looking at them. They were dressed normally but just very suspicious they would be videoing what seemed to be the plant.

As far as the numerous tips go I completly understand they are hammered with such tips. It probably was just nothing but with the information on the car and everything I thought maybe someone might run the tag and just see if anything looked out of order. I know most "tips" probably fall on deaf ears but I felt the need to at least try and do my duty.

"If you see something, say something." Good for you. I would have called 911.
Something similar happened right here at my local supermarket. A group of middle eastern men were sauntering through the store looking out of place. It made my skin crawl. I'm sure it was just a bunch of Arabs getting ready to buy the store.
Maybe that carload full was getting ready to buy that powerplant with cash.

You absolutely did the right thing!

I'm just pointing out the sad obvious truth & I suggest calling the FBI as, since 9/1/2001 there main focus is against terrorism & they would have the most interest in at least passing that tip along to whoever would want it. (I assume the plant you are talking about is a nuclear power plant?)
I'm not sure if it may be the NRC or whoever has overall interest in nuke plant security but the FBI would certainly know where to send the info.
If you know any politicians personally & could get them involved that would GREATLY enhance the chance of any tip being pursued. (sad but true)

Working at a nuke plant myself, I can say that our local cops take any tips seriously and would at least run the plate numbers. Might report it to plant security too. Will anything come of it, probably not.

Taking video outside of a plant doesn't gain much. Go Google earth the plant and see how much you can see. I can tell who is at work by their cars in the lot at our plant.

That was a good response.

You did exactly the correct thing. So many of the 'suspicious activity' reports don't have the car make/model/tag number, these make the report valid and traceable.

Thank you for being a good citizen.

Doesn't everybody drive around video taping power plants? Why just last week I was video taping the local sub-station.

You absolutely did the right thing.

Goggle Earth gives views in such detail why video tape?

I'm "Guessing" that it was probably just a car full of contractors video-taping an area where they had some work to do..... tree removal, road construction...whatever......but you never can KNOW for sure.

I grew up in that area many years ago (parents still live there) and you are correct, there isn't really anything of interest to video. However, there were a couple good "parking" spots back near the power plant about 30 years ago! Not that I know anything about it personally....you know kids at school would talk about it....oh wait, my Mom isn't reading this is she....

Good job Bill, always report what you think is suspicious, no need to question yourself. When you followed them did they drive back through Linfield to get as close as they could? I cross the DelMemBr quite often and they always have a # flashing on the electric message boards to report suspicious activity with the #. (right after the gambling crisis #)

Bill, THANK YOU for calling. Most peopple would have just kept on going. Weather or not your call "raised some flags", it was correct to call in your suspisions. I say THANK YOU, cuz who knows.... your call may have saved a million lives, if their intention was a terrorisom act.

Definitly reporting it was correct. At this time even the fellows from the middle east know the concern this country has for such activity and would be(should be) more prudent even doing something like that. In my opinion only no good was going on there. Myself would have followed them till they stopped and asked them what they were doing, naturally back up would have been alerted. Chances are while following them they would get suspicious and run or stop . A sharp eyed and minded citizen is this countries best defense for those who slithered thru the cracks. Good Job Bill 8-)
