Best Way To Upload A Video?

Best Way To Upload A Video?

PostBy: Devil505 On: Sun Mar 29, 2009 4:54 pm

I'm thinking of borrowing my daughter's video camera, recording how I shake down, poke & reload my Harman TLC & uploading it to the forum. Any tips on file formats & file sizes or ny other tips on the best way to do it? (I don't even know what type camera she has but it records to a disc I think)

I don't up-load to u-tube. Just add the video as an attachment, just like a picture.

Won't that take up allot of Richard's file space? (any preferable movie format/size?)

Ooops! Sorry Richard!
The movie comes off my camera in .AVI format. If I do any editing, I usually convert it to .WMV format.
I know .WMV uploads as an attachment. Done it, and the size is not too outrageous.
Looks like Richard has Size limits in place.

After you film it transfer to your computer and you can use windows Movie maker to edit and encode it. For files that are uploaded here to be viewable by everyone and embedded they need to be WMV. Once you have created your masterpiece export the video from Windows movie maker using:

  1. "Save movie file" option which will open up a wizard.
  2. When you get to the selection for "Movie Settings", use "Other Settings".
  3. From the drop down box select "Video for Lan (768Kbps)"

    View: New PagePopup • Select:BBCode

  4. Under movie file size check that the estimated file size is below 200MB.
  5. If it is not from the drop down box select "Video for Broadband (512kbps)"
  6. If it's still not under the limit of 200MB use the next lower one.

Once the new file is encoded you can upload here as you would an image. The forum will automatically embed the video in a silverlight player which is cross browser and cross platform friendly. I'll be providing a more in depth tutorial at some point.... add it to the really long list. :P

Reason: changed limits on files to reflect new larger limits.

At the moment I'm not concerned about it, I'll buy more space if neccesary. Just don't go crazy with the pointless content. You may upload all the video tutorials you want, I have all the space in the world for them.

Thanks Richard. Do you have a preference for:
1. uploading to Youtube & then just linking to here

or

2. just upload the file directly to here?

I prefer here as I have no idea what the future holds for youtube... 10 years from now those videos may be gone or whatever. Youtube can do whatever they want. Even deny allowing them to be embedded. If you upload them here like the images they stay forever. It's the same problem with images not uploaded here, I've already had to go and edit posts with images linked offsite because they were no longer available. FYI if you come across any posts like that use the report button.

Always upload here if possible and make sure it's your own content. The news videos found on youtube that are often linked to from here for example would be removed.

OK...I made the video but the Sony Dig Camera saved it in something called a VOB file??I can get it to play in a few players but nothing will let me Save As anything....(The Save As button is greyed out?)
Anyone ever heard of VOB files & know how to convert them so I can upload the masterpiece? (it's 700,640kb big)

A VOB file (Video Object) is a container format in DVD-Video media. VOB is based on MPEG-2 program stream format, but with additional limitations and specifications in the private streams.[1][2] It contains the actual Video, Audio, Subtitle, and Menu contents in stream form.

Other DVD files include IFO and BUP files.

Playback
A player of generic MPEG-2 files can play VOB files, although sometimes only after renaming the file extension to .mpg.[citation needed]

ALLPlayer, MPlayer, VLC media player, Media Player Classic and more platform-specific players play VOB files.
