2.5 tons is in that trailer?
Reason I'm asking is I'm building my own trailer to haul about that amount of coal.
What are the dimensions of your trailer?

I Hear you!!!! That was just a trail run,, tommorow i'am shootig for 4 ton's!!! Have to watch though were I am dumping it the ground is very soft. I was unable to get the truck back to were I wanted to dump so I had to unhook the truck and get the tractor on it to get were I wanted to dump. That trailer is 6 by 12, 12,000 pound rating, I pull it with that 92 f-250 diesel. I had 8 yard of mulch on their with no sideboard's. With sideboard's I probably could get 12 yard. That trailer is the best thing so far that I ever bought ( other than the coal stove!) Wish I would have had that year's ago!!

You need about 40 cubic feet per ton, having said that the max weight on the trailer and the towing capacity of the vehicle is going to be the big factor.

SOOOOO..... assuming a 1/2 ton trailer weight, you could LEGALLY get 5 ton! :D I am assuming you got electric brakes. Don't forget, the F250 can easly hold another ton or two in the bed. NICEEEEE setup .

If it's not so far away, I would consider taking more trips and not beating your equipment. I know when I run 5 ton it sure is alot harder on my trailer than 3. It doesn't stop as easy with 5   Good looking load of coal!! Grab it all while the gettin's good :) Scott

5 ton is 10,000 pounds which is easily going to exceed most trailers capacity of that size not to mention the towing capacity of the truck and you don't have drivers license to carry that much weight. If you get stopped by DOT they are not going to mess around and you will be fined some big time $$$. Remember you only need a single point of failure and there are many places that can happen. Tires, axles, springs... lugs are pretty common on grossly overloaded vehicles.

Now that's what i'am talking about!!! The place where I am getting the coal is only 3 mile down the road from me, so i'am thinking of just hauling about 2-3 ton at a time, take it easy on the old f-250, she will pull some load's though! Yep the trailer has electric brake's on her, that will (is a must) be what you will need on the trailer you are going to build, just for the heck of it I turn my brake contoller down low with a load of limestone( I had about 3 ton on) on the trailer to see how I could get it stoped,,,,,not good. You can really feel the load pushing, so I quickly set the brake contoller back up. I do know in PA they are really watching these trailer's,, DOT will get you in a heartbeat,, like you said, least little thing!!

Hi Theo, That's a nice trailer, If You are only going 3 miles, why buy one. If it flys, floats, or @#$k% its cheaper to rent it! P.S. Theo in the Visayan dialect means uncle. :D

Maybe this car could have a hopper installed to haul coal.

Just a side note, To be legal in PA you need to have Combination plates on your truck. Probably class 6 or 7 for your setup. Any trailer over 10K lbs you need to have combo plates. Your looking at min $500 fines without it.

Don't need a CDL like many people think, but there are other rules when you get over 10K lbs but stay under 26K combo.

I have a 14K lb trailer and Class 8 plates on mine. Been checked out by the state enforcement. I have been used as an example by the state police in their training program. The state police have put together a task force cracking down on smaller trailers after the few incidents like the wood chipper that broke away and killed almost a whole family a couple years ago.

Going 3 mi down the road I wouldn't worry about it, but highway I would.

I've always thought about getting a dump trailer. Right now we have an old one ton chevy dump. By the time you pay for insurance and registration and everything I often wonder if it would be better just having a trailer. Only thing holding me back is the old truck isn't worth much to sell and a new trailer is kinda pricey.

I looked into the trailor also but found out to do it legal you need the combo plate for truck and trailor. Then the problem is you need commercial insurance for unit and not all reg insurance co. will write that.
