Why is there a pop up and what is it?

Why is there a pop up and what is it?

This question came up in a PM. This forum uses pop ups for a few things. The only one that would not be initiated by click on a link would be a pop up that notifies you if have a new PM(s). This feature can be turned on or off in the control panel.

Control Panel  Preferences Tab  Pop up window on new private message: yes/no

Other pops are user initiated such as if you click the "View more Smilies" link or "Find a Member" when composing a PM message.

There are no pop ups for ads, surveys or other crap you might find elsewhere. Every pop up coming from this site has a useful purpose and will be either because you chose to get it or clicked a link to initiate it.

I like the pop-ups for new PM's. Good indicator of when a new PM arrives. Better than the email indicators.

Those can be turned on or off in your profile too. By default when you register all email notifications are turned off.

To enable/disable email notifications for PM's:

Control Panel  Preferences Tab  Notify me on new private messages:

To enable/disable email notifications for posts:

Control Panel  Preferences Tab  Edit Posting Defaults  Notify me upon replies by default: yes/no

Also note you can apply this individually to just specific topic using the subscribe/unsubscribe link on the lower left of a topic.

I think I had just finsihed a Sam Adams Double Bock when I changed my setting the other day. I didn't remember but it plainly said a pop-up was used for e-mail notification. My bad. It is good to know you use pop-ups responsibly. :)
