We don't need no stinking thermometer

We don't need no stinking thermometer

PostBy: Richard S. On: Thu Apr 09, 2009 4:05 am

I came across this image in a post last year from January where the temps went up mid January and forum visits dropped off significantly.

Coincidentally the same thing happened this nearly on the same dates except it got cold and forum visits spiked. I added the daily mean temperatures for each day in red next to it. FYI I've been following the same trend of doubling traffic every year. :D

It would be interesting to see how many posts were registered per month, VS cost of fuel oil increases. THATS when I started looking at alternative heating (besides wood). No way I was going to pay $5.00 per gal, which was close to what our local supplier was charging.

This forum first took off after Katrina. It was dead one day and presto chango it started getting some attention. The activity would start slowing down about March to Feb which it has this year however last year traffic continued to go up through the spring and summer until it peaked at the start of March. If the oil and other fuel prices had stayed where they were I'd probably need a dedicated server by now. I was somewhat disappointed when the bottom fell out of it.

Edit: in case anyone is wondering a "Visit" is how many unique IP's have accessed any page in a 24 hour period and they are only counted once so yes it's a significant amount of people.

Hang in there Richard, you'll get that dedicated server some day :D Although VM and LPARS are becoming very popular on the big Wintel servers now, maybe you will never have a dedicated server.
I was managing VM and LPARS for the last 25 years on S390 and Z/OS machines. It has only become popular on Wintel over the last 5 years.

Another "Post Per" topic...... Can you measure the BTU ouput (or input) per Post? Looks like some of the days on your chart, you could be heating a small town :D

Hello, DVC500, it's good to meet a fellow dinosaur. I worked on those IBM mainframes for almost 40 years. REAL computers with REAL operating systems. Not like these silly little Bill Gates specials where you never know from one day to the next whether they will work or not....
