where are the breakers today????

yes those are coal pillars in a flat pitch mine. that is the baltimore vein. and the wooden props were used to hold up any loose pieces of top that have cracked or hanging top that were too big draw down. some veins like the clark had real bad top and had to be propped and timbered very well like this:
