the scared srtaight mentality AS OPPOSED TO the " just the way it is" mentality was indeed the comparrison i directed my opinion to. A good friend of mine from mannasquan(?) NJ told me the scared straight program turned him around in his young teens. I can vouch for his good parenting and ethical business as a bonded and insured service person. therefore it does happen.
naturally the double working parent household effect of the prior 40 or so years has had the profound effect you speak of.
down under in the land of samolia the effect on a pre teen watching such a execution would plant the seed. personally napalm would work much better say 10 miles inland up and down the whole coast.
we could cycle thru much old ordiance from our system making a CHANGE in thier methodology....

While it seems to have worked with your friend, and I can assure you, I got cured of my road rage when I was looking down the wrong end of a gun( ) but we're talking about Somalia here. So you kill 100 or 1000 pirates. There are always more looking to take their place. Does the War on Drugs ring a bell?

They've made the threat to kill hostages of other countries before. So far, they haven't followed through. Dead hostages aren't worth a whole lot. They are in it for the money.

And I don't know with 100% certainty, but I think international law prevents companies from protecting themselves. Seems like a perfect job for Blackwater (Xe) operators to me. I'd think 4 guys making $150k/yr on each boat would be pretty effective.

The kids that are getting sucked into this will quickly find out that they'll either get it in the head or spend the rest of their lives playing drop the soap in the slammer. My guess is they'll decide to stay off the boats.

Juvenile/adult law questions are interesting. On the one hand, if a kid is (stupidly) playing with a gun and kills somebody, there clearly isn't sufficient "intent" to commit a capital offense. On the other, if a kid persistently is committing crimes involving foresight, planning and murder, why shouldn't they pay the price? Actually, though, I think the Supremes decided this recently when they held that the heightened level of intent required for a capital offense simply could not be formed biologically by a human being under 18 years of age. The frontal lobes of their brains just aren't fully developed.

And most of us with 18 y/olds can understand that....

Bottom line: no death penalty, but probably no juvenile law either. Lifetime room and board.

Most of you are much more harsh than I, the poor kid has already been tramatized let him go right now. Maybe even give him a good meal first, then let him off the ship, hell I`d even throw him a six pack in case he got thirsty on his swim home.

The kid is going to be staying in The Lincoln Bedroom for a few years; he will be home schooled by Tim Geithner. Supplemental education will include effective tax evasion, teleprompter diction, basketball. First there's going to be another fly- the- chef- in pizza party.
