I `m buying a small house (1,000 sq ft) Older House that has a DF-520 with steam heat This was converted years ago and still looks good and runs quiet
It used 1,300 gallons of oil last year It was an older couple and they kept very warm all the time but This is more than my old house used and its twice the size.
As per service company it is running at 79% efficient. it does heat water also

Questions

Is this normal for this boiler to use this much oil ?
Can I still convert it back to burn both oil & coal ?
should I use a eletric hot water heater for hot water in summer months

I`m just trying to be prepared for next winter What should I do ?

Paul,
The boiler is more efficient when it burns coal and yes, you can burn either fuel. I have the domestic coil in mine with no hot water storage tank and no issues.

The oil kit was really meant to be a back-up for vacations and other reasons why you couldn't dump ashes. Your boiler can be made to use coal at any point.

It may be a good idea to post some pics of what you have too. That way the wizards can tell you what you will need to do to fire it up.

You would need two Auger's & tubes with a tube coupling One complete blower Assembly & fire Pot and a few ash cans and a timer if there is not one there. Coal bin or 55 drum you would be ready to burn coal Oh and another AC Power
switch to control the coal stoker motor so you can switch between Coal & Oil. PM ME if you want to make the switch
to coal Can help with all Parts needed.
