I have been thinking about this for awhile. I want to feel protected or same in the case of a home invasion. It is only my wife and i. No kids. I don't want to be taken by surprise someday by an intruder in my home. I want the intruder to be the one who is surprised.

I talked with a few people today at work who own guns. I asked them what the best gun for someone like me who has never owned a gun before but wants to protect his family if someone breaks in.

He told me to buy a mossberg shotgun 18". I was thinking before I talked to him that a small hand gun would be a good choice. He said to me what do you want to do, piss of the intruder or kill. It made sense to me. I have shot guns before but don't have much practice. The few times I shot I was surprisingly accurate. I know with a mossberg shotgun I would feel a lot saffer if someone broke in.

What gun do you guys prefer to use for a home invasion? Do you think a mossberg shotgun is the way to go?

Indeed the shotgun is prolly your best weapon . mossberg makes a decent one. the noise from cocking usually is enough deterrent but then the 00buck,sabot slug,00buck,rifled slug,000buck shot can handle those that continue the invasion.

Would it be stupid to buy a mossberg type shotgun from walmart?

I was told I could go today and walk out with it

For many mossberg has made a very affordable shotgun. Thier mod 500 is very neat.

as recomended a pump loader or auto loader is the sensible choice. you can further accessorize the stock and grips from on line supply houses. I would see which models wally world has and then do some research for different stocks and grips for it before buying it. also the elastic spare shell holders for the stock. then you could be confident of buying it and altering it for your fit and personal need/choice. 8-)

The Mossberg is a good choice with twin action bars (very strong).

Also check out the Rmington 870 Pump with an 18"--22" barrel. I like fiber optic sights on this type of shotgun (good in low light). The shotguns set up for deer hunting have sights.

Look at the safety location on each... I like the Mossbergs better.

With a $10. adapter you can mount a flashlight or laser.

I bought my Remington 870 used very little for $200. on GunBroker.com

I like the idea of a mounted laser. That would be very intimidating!

what sort of price range should I prepare myself for.

Is there a lot of extras I should get with a shotgun and what kind of ammo?

#1- Get some ear plugs and safty glasses.

The dealer price on the Mossberg 500 Persuader 12ga. 20" barrel, 8 shot mag #50577 is $260. / with shipping its about $285. So if you are in the $340.- - $350. range you are ok.

For ammo start out with cheap 12ga. skeet loads, #8 or #9s at wallmart or Dicks Sporting Goods.

This ammo has low recoil... Get use to the shotgun with the cheap ammo.

Then buy a few boxes of Remington, Winchester, or Federal 00 BUCK in the 2-3/4"

Also I like Federal 12ga. 2-3/4" magnum #2 shot ( Very nasty stuff) :rambo2:

Good news, every Walmart I visit has plenty of 12ga ammo.

.45acp, 9mm, .223Rem & 22lr ...... not so much.

Edit : Stick with buckshot for HD, the rest is for the birds, literally.

I'm not much of a gun person, but I saw a nice pistol last week that I thought might be a good choice for home. It looks like a "normal" revolver, but shoots a 410 shotgun shell. It holds five shots. I thought $650 was a bit steep!

I really like what I see with the mossberg 500 persuader 12 guage 18", 3" Chmbr, 6 Shot Parkerized, Cylinder Bore Barrel, Pistol Grip Kit. I saw it online for 267.75 plus shipping but I don't know any ffl licensed guns dealers.

Would wal-mart or some other chain store carry this gun?

A laser is an intimidation. You should consider a light also. You really need to be able to identify your target in the dark. A laser won't do that for you. You don't want to take a chance and maybe hurt a drunk friend playing a prank. A good bright light will also blind an intruder for a while, making you less of a target.
