The space shuttle Atlantis (L) sits on launch pad 39BA and the space shuttle Endeavour (R) sits on launch pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida April 17, 2009. Endeavour will be acting as a rescue vehicle if needed for the space shuttle Atlantis' mission to the Hubble Telescope, which is scheduled for lift off on May 12, 2009

hmm, two shuttles ready to go....something other than "possible rescue mission" is up for a hubble mission. They don't put that cost out for that reason.....can we say.......Bruce Willis's Armageddon.....

I would think more like Deep Impact. A cookie to whomever figures out why.....

On a serious note didn't both of those movies show us that it wouldn't work anyway?

Ever since the space station came on line we have tried to only launch when there was a means of rescue. Either we knew the Russians were ready to launch a rescue effort, or we were close to ready with another vehicle. I want a cookie!

Because STS-125 is not flying to the ISS, its crew does not have the added protection of taking safe haven on the station should Atlantis be damaged during flight. To offset that risk, NASA decided to ready a second shuttle on the second pad as a rescue ship, to launch as needed.

....Or maybe they are preparing for rescue operations for the WhiteNightTwo....

Pucker factor
While details remain a tad murky, the tail damage was apparently caused during a touch-and-go runway approach by WhiteKnightTwo, which created a "pucker factor" in eyewitnesses watching the flight
