DVC500_at_last is correct, if it's in the "outbox" it means it hasn't been delivered yet or they haven't gone to their "inbox". There's no way to actually tell if they read the message, once it leaves the "outbox" it simply means it's in the recipients "Inbox". You can edit or even delete a message up until it leaves the "outbox".
Not sure why you have issues with the submit button but you should only have to hit it once.
