Finally! I got a job interview tomorrow :-)

PostBy: 009to090 On: Tue May 12, 2009 4:26 pm

Well, after sending out countless resumes over the past 8 months, I finally have an interview scheduled for 3:00pm tomorrow. One of the companies I used to work for, gave me a call today. Time to get out the "interview Suit" :D Its for a position I did not do in the past, but one I am keanly qualified for, and can expand upon.

Anyone have any good suggestions or knock-dead phrases to use at an interview, these days?

I'll update this thread after the interview.

Good Luck! Be positive, enthusiastic, all that, you know. I myself have tons of work, am grateful for it these days!

Tell them you'll blow the doors off anybody that interviews. Tell 'em you're the best and they're lucky to have a chance to have you. Tell 'em you'll outwork anybody and you want 20% more than they're offering or you'll walk out the door right now.

OK don't listen to me for advice to start with. Seriously-- good luck!

Four words: "I work for free."

I don't personally recommend this, but a potential employer would probably love to hear it. :)

The circumstances under which you left the company before might be one important piece of info with which to present yourself, such as:
"You're already familiar with the quality of my work from my past job here, and I'll bring the same work ethic and energy to this job as I did the last" (this assumes you left on good terms, otherwise don't remind them :D )

Also, if you need to pull the ace out of your sleeve to seal the deal, tell them you have the knowledge and expertise to reduce their heating bills significantly next winter :)

Good luck DVC--you'll do great.

Good point. I got "re-badged", due to the fact this company outsourced their Information Technology division in Jan2005. I was one of the 'lucky ones' in so much as the Outsourcing company hired me. but in Oct 2008, The outsourcing company cut ranks in preperation of the recession, and I was laid off. I kept in contact with co-workers and management from both companies, and finally looks like thats paying off.

Smart. So, they already know you well and are calling you for an interview. That should make you quietly confident.

Focus on organizational and people skills - they already know your a good engineer or you wouldn't have an interview. "Team player" and "positive attitude" are good key words as well.

I just got back from the interview. What a joke. The "SENIOR Technical" position was nothing but a glorified "Administrative Assistant" position, with the wrong title. Not a Technical or analytical position at all. Over-qualified is now a term I am familiar with first hand. After the interview, I was told the salary range. Exactly HALF what I used to make there.
Oh well, I'll just keep looking......
