Gear Oil for Older Gear Box

Gear Oil for Older Gear Box

PostBy: Mikeny On: Wed May 13, 2009 8:59 pm

Hi, I'm setting up an older used 520 and want to change the gear oil. I saw a post from Stoker-Man recommending 20w oil. Is that motor oil? The only "gear oil", I'm finding around here is more like 80-90w
ps. This forum is amazingly helpful

I'm on vacation and don't have my contacts at hand, but I'm pretty sure it's machine oil or straight 20W motor oil. Smell it. You can smell gear oil.

EFM AP-520 & the older DF-520. Note The new Reducing unit are self lubricating sealed up units on the newer DF-520.

Motor - fill each cup with ten drops of either SW-30 or 10 W Oil once to twice a year unless stated otherwise on motor
label by motor manufacturer .

Reducing unit - Use light gear oil - examine level once a year.

Connecting rod - both ends bearing bracket and Pawls - a few drops of machine oil every month.

Ratchet Oil Reservor - Fill with extra heavy gear oil (600W or Oil of equal viscosity) as required .

If your gear box is large, blue, and has a 90 degree elbow to fill it, it uses the light oil. Fill so you can see the oil in the fill elbow.

Note all AP-520 use the large Reducing gear box with the 90 degree elbow and some of the early DF units had them
aswell. Also some had a small glass window in them so you could see the oil level
