If you click on the "recent changes link" because of the way the links are formatted the RSS feeds are separated. The background color directly below the arrow is the same color from one side to other but it appears that it goes from light to dark left to right.

If you look at the very top of the box above the heading "Toolbox" then follow it down the right side you'll see it does not change.

There is a "Shading" option in Excel, Powerpoint, and SAS GRAPH, that allows you (purposefully) to shade a bar graph from light to dark.
I like to use it, as it impresses the bosses.
Looks like your example is doing it automatically. Notice the blank line between the ATOM and the UPLOAD FILE lines are not shaded at the left, at all. Solid color. Its probably a global option, if you did not include the "Shade" option in your code?

There's no shade, the blank space between "Atom" and "Upload file" is a completely solid, same color from one side to the other. Hence the reason it's an illusion, it just looks like it's shaded. ;)

There's no shade option in HTML or CSS :P . When you view a page it's combination of assigning colors and images if you want anything like shade. For example main navigation bars on the top are created with three images.:

This is set as the background and it's just repeated:

This is a single image used for both the top and bottom corners,

If you look clsoely at the corners you can see it as it's just a little too light on the top bar and a little too dark on the bottom bar.
