I just finished installing Vista SP2 on one of my Notebooks. It was painless. About 360MB download, though
This was on top of about 20 Security-risk updates that installed yesterday. Another 340MB

I just ordered a new PC from Dell. It will be coming with Vista SP1 pre-installed. I also own an extra copy of Win XP Pro. I'm thinking of formatting the hard drive as soon as it arrives, and installing XP. Are there any benefits of one over the other?

I got my new PCs with Vista Ultimate installed. It was real buggy 2 years ago, until Sp1 came out. It fixed ALOT of the quirks. No more crashes. SP2 should add alot of great options. I've never gone back to XP.

Vista is the definition of resource hog. If the computer has enough RAM which is the primary problem most people have with Vista no reason to downgrade.

Unless you're using cutting edge hardware or software there is real no reason to have Vista. Having said that no reason to get rid of it either as long as the sytem can handle your needs.

Do an image of the drive.
Then mess with it.
Vista 64bit gets past the 3.2 gig limit on ram from the 32bit XP.
Lots of ram is nice to have if your programs can use it.
Vista SP2 caused no problems so far.
Vista is not the Devil now unless you have custom software/hardware and that usually only pops up in mid/large businesses.

I was tempted to install Fedora before I got my new computers with Vista installed. I thought I'd give it a try... That was almost 2 years ago. SP2 did make my T61 faster. Noticeably faster. The R61 is faster too, but errors with certain parts of the OS. I'm doing a System Restore on it right now.

I prefer where there is motive there is a way. I read an article where two guys sat down over about 3 or 4 day span and successfully found an exploit, the motive was money as there was a prize.

Skip Vista and install Windows 7. It's what Vista should have been to begin with. 64 bit version is best if you have a dual core cpu with at least 4 gb of ram.

Does anyone have a pre-release of 7?

I just found out that ThinkVantage System Update does not work with SP2. I had to upgrade it to version 3.14, AND install a patch for it. The patch is available on Lenovo's website.
