Help with Hitzer 503 insert decision

PostBy: jcbcoal On: Mon Jun 15, 2009 2:58 pm

We need help deciding on a Hitzer 503 insert.
Here's the situation. The insert would be installed in a masonry wood burning fireplace. The masonry chimney needs to be lined. I can get the stove and lining installed for around $3200 or so.
I own a 2100 square foot 2-story home that currently heats with a gas fired boiler. The boiler is about 40 –year old or so. Last year (Nov throught April) we spent about $1500 on gas to heat the home at a cost of about 1.27 a therm. I keep the house at about 65 during the day and 62 at night.
We would like a warmer home without turning the boiler thermostat temperature up.
I can get bagged coal for about $275 a ton or so.

Our concerns are;
How much heat can we expect from the stove ? Will the upstairs be warm. Do we need to leave the upstairs bedroom doors open to heat ? Any thoughts on the cost/benefits of going with the coal insert. How much coal would we burn on average to keep the house at about 70 degrees or so ?
How difficult is it to move this stove ? I can purchase the stove and install myself and save some money but I am wondering how hard is it to manage a 600 lb stove ?
Any thoughts to help us decide if this would be a good scenario for us is very much appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

There is a very good thread on the install of the 503.
Not hard to do just some pipe and muscle to move it.
If you are handy and have some common sense it is very easy.
My 'rents house 2100 sq ft on the Cape at 74* burned about 3.5 ton 11/08 to 5/19/09.

Link to the 503 install thread.
It is long but informative!

My house is around the same size as yours. Last year I used just over 3 tons of coal and 75 gallons of oil to keep the house @ 76 degrees and I had a happy wife :) .
In years prior I used around 1250 gallons of oil and around 2 to 3 cords of wood I kept the the house at 66 to 70 with a cold unhappy wife  .
If nothing else it's worth it just to keep the wife happy.
I love my 503

Thanks CapeCoaler-
I was wondering about the pipe to move the stove. I was thinking of placing pipe down in front of the hearth and then setting the stove on the pipe and pushing it back (rolling) into the firplace and leaving the pipe there. Does that sound like what you did ? Did you move the stove yourself ? Anyone else have ideas/thoughts ?
Thanks

Slides on the cardboard from the box it comes in.
Sliced it in half before we slid it in the firebox.
This let it slide over the rough bricks.
The surround would be off the ground by the height of your pipe.
The stove is not that heavy!
Hand truck, 2 people and 2 hours to position it in the fireplace.
Dealing with the liner and the fireplace throat was a different story!
In the end the 503 ran November to mid May with no issues.
Spend the time on the install and the result will be a warm winter inside the house.
