Im new to coal heating so help me out. I've been going through tons of options for a coal boiler. I just bought a house with an oil fired boiler with a tankless coil. Im planning on putting an indirect coil DWH here shortly. My question is, can I put a VF3000 in series with my oil fired boiler running up the same flue? If so, does the flue need to be steel lined for coal?

Are you really in Hell's Kitchen, or did you just PO the wife and make yourself a Wayne Bobbitt lookalike?
Most codes don't allow same flue exchange of gases, and if the VF is going to be the primary,
I'd use you current chimney for it, assuming it is a solid, lined chimney....and secure another venting process for the oil boiler.
Make darned sure you check with local code enforcement folks, because in the event of a fire, or other disaster, make sure to err on the safe side. Are there units together in the same flue? No comment.....but if and when a fire official, insurance inspection, or code check occurs, I like to smile because I did the right thing. CO2 detecters, smoke detectors, high temp alarms all make it easy to sleep well, all warm and cozy.

Yes and but, it can be done. Its biggest problem is the code issue. Depending on how you feel about that, you will have several options.hellskitchen wrote:My question is, can I put a VF3000 in series with my oil fired boiler running up the same flue?

I do not recommend a liner unless the existing chimney has issues, they create more problems than they are worth in most cases. Since you are still alive running the oil burner through it, it is more than likely suitable for coal. Steel itself would be the absolute last choice for liner material. Ceramic is first, stainless steels would be next but the choice of which must be made very carefully.
I have posted Burnham Boiler's instructions for installing solid fuel boilers with oil burners using the same flue several times, let me know if you want them.

I've been reading everything I can find about hooking up the vf 3000 tied into my oil boiler. I must have missed the burnham boiler instructions you speak of. Are they posted here? I've allready bought a new vf 3000, I will be picking up my boiler sometime in august. I'm not quite ready for it yet, its just sitting on the dealers floor waiting for me.
Thank you in advance...

I've been running both an oil boiler & my Harman hand-fired up a single flue for 4 years. It's not legal here, but I need to stay warm & save money. Someday I'll fix it right when the funds allow. In my situation, there is no danger of fire, & it pulls a decent draft under all conditions (old, brick chimney in the center of house -- not outside) -- but try explaining that to an insurance co. I worked too hard for everything I have & I would never endanger my family or the house, but insurance co's only see $$$$$.
You'll love the indirect boiler -- I put one in about 4 years ago. You'll go from having 3 quarts of hot water to almost limitless hot water!
