A Fresh Face!

A Fresh Face!

Hello,

I am new to the site and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Art and I live in Upstate NY (the Rochester area), I just purchased and setup my first coal stoker stove. It is a Leisure Line Pioneer Top Vent, which i must say is a very sharp looking stove and adds a little something to my first floor :D . I have actually read many of the topics on this site to help out with some questions and information, I def found everyone here very helpful when gathering data. Excellent site, and that is why i decided it might be in my best interest to join.

I actually do have a question that i couldn't find an answer to, and this might be a good time to ask. Since i just purchased my new Leisure Line is there a break in stage that should be done before I start using it for this winter. I understand it is June and I have plenty of time but just wanted to make sure that if i need to run break in process, that i do that well in advance before I attempt to heat my home.

Thanks
Art

Art,

Just run it. The paint will smoke a little the first time,
but nothing else needs to be done. Set the time on the
coal trol, light it, and sit back and enjoy.

Yep, its going to smoke some, as the exterior paint cures. Make sure you have lots of ventilation (windows opened).

Just a tip:

If you can, run it low while the paint cures -- it's gonna smoke longer, but paint generally cures better with a long bake at 250* - 300*, rather than a 500* blast for a shorter period. Also helps keep the color uniform.

Sounds like a great idea, I will make sure the is sufficient ventilation in the house.

Congrats on your new stove and welcome to the forum. Always good to get a fresh face!

I'm surprised everyone has let you try this break in on your own. You should ship the stove to a willing person on the forum that is experienced in this sort of thing and let them season it for two full seasons. I'm sure they'll loan you their rusty piece of crud while they do you the favor.

OK, OK.... barring that, I guess I'd go with door #3 and follow Smitty's plan. *smile*

Stop by often!

haha, I am surprised myself that no has offered to take on the challenge of breaking the stove in for me. I was certain I would have had at least one person offer.

Thanks again guys.Very nice site, lots of info and knowledgeable people.

Art,

I burned coal in a hand fed for twenty or more years before getting
the Pioneer stoker. One thing that was a little shocking to me was
how fast the stove started and came up to temperature. The first
hour is a very lively burn, until the coal trol gets its' sea legs and
starts to quiet down. Just thought I'd mention it before you get
started.

Tom,

Thanks for the input, great information! Always good to know little details like that. Esp. with a new stove and a new system.
