Anthracite coal in MI ? Western OH ? Northern IN ?

PostBy: keitholivier On: Tue Jun 23, 2009 7:40 pm

The local stove shops in Jackson, MI are asking $385/ton for Anthracite coal bagged when taking full pallets. Delivery not included...

There seems to have been a loss of dealers who stock and sell coal in recent years. Does ANYONE ship anthracite in bulk by rail to locations in the Midwest ? Trucking 500+ miles is pretty expensive given diesel prices and rail has the capacity to move a whole lot more material more economically.

If anyone in Lower Michigan has a better lead on anthracite coal I would be interested. I have a 6000lb load capacity flatbed trailer and doing 100-200 mile one way is a whole different deal compared to 500+ one way to the breakers in PA.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure you would need to buy a train load of coal to make it happen by rail, one hopper car might be fairly hard to pull off. Truck is the only real option. Most mines have a list of trucking companies, give your favorite a call.

Ls Farms takes a full truckload in bulk. I cannot do more than 3-4 tons at a time. And I do not know a single person who burns coal in the neighborhood.

I recently bought a 2.5 tons of coal from an Amish Farmer down in Hesperia MI. $280/ton and I picked it up with a trailer. He loaded it with his tractor.
Maple Ridge Woodstoves, 9193 S. 192nd Ave, Holton, MI 49425 (Edward) 231-821-9161

If I could have it delivered for a reasonable cost, I would love to consider this as an option.
There just didn't seem to be many others within a 90 mile radius of Onekama, MI that sold coal.

I get my bagged anthracite from KW Feeds just west of Clare, MI. That's not too far north of Jackson. Owner Ken Warner is about 5 miles west of US-127, easy in, easy out. I got my coal for this current heating season for $360 per skid. If you have a 6K capacity trailer, that's 2.5 skids of coal right there. Ken is super nice gent and has a early year buy program. Give him a call @ 989-588-0549 and see what he can do for you. :D
