Stupid Slow Internet

Stupid Slow Internet

PostBy: Wood'nCoal On: Tue Jul 07, 2009 10:05 pm

It started late last week. I have cable internet from Service Electric Cable Television provided by Penn Tele Data. I called yesterday (yesterday?? You'll call now!!!). I ran speed tests while on the phone with them, they are sending out a technician on Thursday sometime between 12 noon and 5 pm.

Sometimes it speeds up, but most of the time it's slow slow slow. Sometimes it stops completely.

I might go back to dial-up for more speed.

We have had DSL for over 5 years now, with no complaints. Still running at 1.5mbps. We still have a connection, even thru the worst storms. My brother just got FIOS installed, and swears by it. His page-loads can no longer be counted in seconds. Less than a second response time is pretty good these days.

Now it's running at 323 kb down and 396 up. This sucks.

It usually runs at around 5 mb down!

I have been using Roadrunner Lite for about 2 years now and have found it to be acceptable as far as download speeds are concerned. Uploading is a whole different story. I have never actually run a test until this topic came up. I have always found the upload speed to be very slow. Especially when uploading pics or audio. The download speed is alright, but not as good as it was before switching from regular RR to the Lite version, but that was expected. I didn't think the upload would be as slow as it is. I don't upload all that much, so I guess I can live with it.

Yeah, theres a problem there. I just ran my test with SpeakEasy, and it 1476kbps down, and 353kbps up. And that thru our wireless router, too.

Hey Woodn'coal, that's as bad as my dial up use to be. I was on a split analog line with a digital parsing system, talk about slow. I just hoped no one would send graphics but it got too slow to even brows the web as pages became more graphically endowed. I held off for a long time till the cable co offered me a year at the same price. You know what they say, once you go cable you never go back!

I only get 750 up, 135 down with Verizon DSL. $21.99/month

Their friggin server crashed & burned this morning -- couldn't use the PC until 5:30 PM, then had to call customer service to get back online when the DSL went back up. Got to talk to SAAAHHEEEEED in India..

HA! Looks like someone at the main switch/hub changed something for you. Did any technicians show up at your door, or did you see any trucks on your street?

And I'm paying for it too! I've been thinking about dsl @ 3mb. Comment's on going from paying for 8 and getting 12 and downgrading to 3? My old desktop wouldn't mind it but the newer laptops off the wireless see a drop?

Dave, Whats the speed of your wireless? Probably around 54Mbps? Thats the speed of 802.11G
Your downloading at 11 or 12 Mbps, so you're router should not be the bottleneck. If you downgrade to 3.0Mbps, you probablt won't see a diffrence on your Page-loads, but you will notice your file downloads will take longer.
Keep in mind, we are happy with 1.5Mbps, and my wife watches TV on hers all the time without noticing any delays.
