So why couldn't you use the same idea but use pvc instead of the copper?

PVC would not be a good medium to transfer heat with.

I have the Solar Panels.

4 2'x20' runs. They work awesome and free when its sunny out. But it hasn't been sunny out this year. My pool got up to 86 degree's a couple of weeks ago. But its been hovering around 78 the last week or so. This temp is fine for me and the kids but my wife won't go in. She has givin approval of possibly heating with coal.

Any suggestions on what exchanger?

The flat plate exchangers or the tube?

Pex from the pool pump or just black pipe?

I would like to get the pool to about 84-86 degree's.

27' AG with a deep end. Aprox 18,000 gallons.

Buy a heat exchanger specifically designed and rated as a pool heater. That may be flat plate or tube--what is important is that it be constructed of materials with good heat transfer (metal) and that can withstand the corrosive effects of sanitized pool water. Typically that will be a high quality stainless steel or titanium heat exchanger.

Piping for the pool water can be standard schedule 40 PVC. Piping for the boiler water can be any number of materials that will withstand the temperature of boiler water but is typically copper or some variant of Pex with an oxygen barrier. The system has to be sized so that the pool water circulating through the heat exchanger temperature doesn't increase by more than about 15 -20 degrees because standard PVC has a fairly limited tolerance for elevated temperatures.

We heat our pool with our mahoning outdoor furnace I bought a small SS plate exchanger off of ebay for $45.00. It's a 10 plate 3'' x 10'' I thought it would be too small but it works great. 24' pool 15000 gal. the hottest I got it was 91* my thermometer in the pool only goes to 110* and the water coming back pegs it. I think if I would run it all day it would get hotter but thats only 4 hours run time. I use black 1/2'' pvc for the supply and return non insulated. I think it works great and I really love the furnace.
