Hot Tub or Pool heated by Coal???

PostBy: vwgtiman On: Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:18 am

This may not be the place to ask this so if so I appologize.. I am lookign at maximizing the use of my boiler once it is up and running in the gargage. Has anyone ran a zone to an exchanger in a pool or hot tub? I was thinking of using my Losch to heat a pool in the summer and a hot tub in the fall/winter.

I'm sure it has been done, there have been a few threads here about this very subject. I plan on looking into it for my pool once I get my AA 260 up and running. You will need a stainless steel, water to water heat exchanger most likely, the rest will be cheap. It has to be cheaper than gas or propane.

There are heat exchangers designed to handle the pool/hot tub chemicals.

I've thought about it but my holdback has been the unwanted heat from the boiler in the house.

With the proper heat exchanger a pool would make a great load test / "dyno" for any boiler. :D

My boiler is in the garage so unwanted heat wont be a problem. I can open one of the three large doors.

I heat my Endless Pool via a heat exchanger that uses a zone from my boiler--coal in winter and oil in summer.

You can build a cheep pool heater out of a length of 6 inch pvc. Reduce both ends with a Tee and circulate the pool water in it - and inside the PVC via the branch ports of the TEE - run 6 passes of 3/4 copper on a proprietary zone off the boiler.

Last year when I was setting up my EFM boiler I was going to heat my pool with it. I even put in a spare zone pump and flow check in the plumbing system. I had time to think about it and decided to heat the pool with solar panels. Why spend money on extra fuel when the sun does it for free? Once I get my other projects done I want to look into substituting the electric heater on my hot tub with a plate exchanger connected to my boiler. I figure I'd save money by getting rid of the electric heat on the hot tub.

This summer it has been cool and overcast and im glad i have and exchanger on my pool and it works awesome! Its a stainless steel tube exchanger 250,000 btu rated i just used the knockoffs of my keystoker k6 that i was going to use for a hotwater modeine in my garage but never got it hooked up! my k6 is in my garage for my radiant floor so i just got the cheap inch pex from llowes 100ft for 75 bucks! and put it in 4inch corrigared pipe above ground 50 ft in each direction as a temporary hookup-trial run. and i have the boiler temp around 130 degreese min and the timer set 7 min every half hour and once the boiler is up to temp it just idles along i use roughly 25-30lbs of rice coal a day on the real cool nights and overcast. and 10-15lbs on sunny days with the solar cover on. the pool is 18 round and 54inches deep. and i just got out of it 15 min ago and the pool temp is 101degreese no shittin either. it takes about 24 hrs runnin hard to bring it up to temp but once its there it idles along, my settings basicaly have the timer keep the tempm up and when the boiler temp drop to 110 it fires and shuts down asround 140 this seems to work best, wheni first hooked it up min max was 160-180 and it took the pool in 30 hrs to 115 but chewed through the coal like crazy. in mahanoy city the nights have been cool around 55 degreese and it realy doesnt effect the temp it varies from 95-100 depending on the weather.even with the bigger exchanger the pool water doest suck the heat out of the boiler like i thought it would i believe the balancing pipe on this helps tremendously!!!!!!!!!!!!

run 6 passes of 3/4 copper on a proprietary zone off the boiler.

Good idea but not with copper, the chemicals in pool water (namely sodium hypochlorite) will erode the copper.

Jeez Mino, my hot tub is only set for 98* this time of year. Anything over 90* in a pool is getting close to needing ice blocks floating in it. :D

Aside from that now I really cannot wait to get my chimney up. Our pool, with the useless solar cover, hasn't touched 80* yet this year. Either it gets warm next Summer via coal or it's going to spring a large leak and become grassland again.

The pool is 18 round and 54inches deep i can look at a pool chart and get an exact gallonage, but i think 7000 gallons???The exchanger is oversized, I know that because my boiler cant even push 250k but I believe It helps because there is more surface area in the exchanger and at lower water temperatures of the boiler it helps the pool heating temendously! The heat exchangerworks flawlessly especially this year with the shitty temps! My dad has those solar mats on the roof and his pool is 78 as of today but the overcast rain and coolnights kill the temp in 2 days. however he achieved 100 degreese with solar> fyi he has 2 solar exchangers 4x20 each and a 10x15 pool.i know the $600 for the exchanger is high but well worth it.

Your right -- sorry I missed the disclaimer -- happens more these days

and I suppose this will not be a good thing when it happens as stinky old black boiler water will mingle into the pool water -- YUCK

BUT -- for a cheep heat exchanger, some may accept the life cycle. It all depends on your view - certainly this wouldn't be an option in a retail installation.
