Front Page Layout

Front Page Layout

PostBy: BigBarney On: Sun Jul 26, 2009 6:02 pm

Richard:

On the front page, where the list of forums is,I think it would be better to have the list

in the first two columns. Some of the titles are under the last post column and could be

overlooked by users,I did it so I know. Thanks for the great Forum.

I'm considering doing something with it but I don't want to change things too fast. The last change was quite dramatic and I don't want to do that again. Large sites for example like Yahoo never make really large changes at once but implement them slowly over time. In one years time the layout might change quite a bit but they make a small change every week as opposed to moving things all at once.

Richard :

I didn't mean a big change only a small tweak.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my explanation so I'll try again.

Title of Forum>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Last Post
....................................................................XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
....................................................................XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
....................................................................XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Description of forum.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA........BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB..... CCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

Move The CCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

to below the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

as in the two column format.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...............BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC................etcetcetcetcetcetc

Hope this is more clear, the groups in each forum stick out

better and are more easily identified. The group in the C column

gets mixed in with the last post above it.

Thank You;

Better? I nned better separation of each main forum. ;) The markup does not lend itself to that very well though without bending the rules.

Richard:

Maybe even an extra few blank lines below the dividing line from the top

group and last post would be easier.

Thought I would let you know, Yahoo must of read the forum because they have a whole new front page layout coming soon. I hit the button that said try out new front page and it is a big change, same info just different layout. Does remind me of netzero with all the ding dang adds though.

I think one of the bright spots on Google is that you can customize the look and feel. Yahoo was stagnant with their look for years and have lost their once dominant role in the search engine arena. Image is everything. I would make the icon pics smaller and the text bigger. I actually liked the old layout better but that's just me. It's a forum so it doesn't have to win any beauty contests.

If I left it like the old layout it would be a mile long with the additions of all the forums. There's more on the way. I don't like to have to scroll ;)

When I get a chance. I'll add it as separate style so you can change it in the ACP. ;)

It might be cool to have a contest and have the users come up with a new design and then vote on it and then you could program it. When I owned and operated Datecentral I knew my limitation. While I'm very good at web graphics and layout our artist just toally blew me out of the water. He was incredible and also very flaky like many of the artists I've met. Here are some of the graphics he did for us. No offense but I would lose the drop shadow on the main page. I think your like me where you strength is more on the programming side and less on the gaphics.

Knowing how to use the tools is only half the battle, when I think of "Artist" I think of someone that is creative. That's one department I lack in but when given an idea or drawing I can certainly reproduce it and take it to another level as I certainly know how to use the tools.

Here's the new logo (unfinshed):

My guy lives in Manhattan and makes 400 a day working in his pagamas. He has programmed for MS, Routers, and many other huge names. He is a cut above the rest. I haven't spoke to him in over 8 years. I got a teaching job and left web programming. Our site had instant messaging, chat with a live chat attendant, Psychologists to ask dating questions to, games, etc. This was all in 99 before the big explosion of users on the net. Our programers didn't use a database program and instead used a text file which caused the site to time out when a matchmaking search was done. After we reached about 3k users the problems became apparent. We tested the site but not with that many users. They screwed us and then wouldn't work with us to fix the problems. Some of it was our fault too on how we handled it. We were both in our twenties and not very savvy. My friend bought me out and then ran the site into the ground. I should be on my Yacht right about now but instead I'm working a daily job. Sob, sob.

I got laid off from my IT job 10 months ago, and still looking for a new one. I look at the bright side: At least I get to spend QUALITY time with my kids, while the wife works. :D
