Fedex needs to charge more because the USPS has what amounts to a monopoly. Having been in the delivery business with erratic customers all over the place you need to plan carefully and not provide instant service to every customer. The more customers you have in the same area the better level of service and more profit you make. Fedex can't do that...

If UPS or Fedex ran a hospital patients might get serviced quicker but they would leave in worse condition than when they arrived. And get lost in the hospital somewhere for a few days even though there's a sophisticated tracking system.

One reason the USPS isn't profitable is the obscene discounts they give to mass mailers. Cut off the corporate welfare they're dishing out and you'd see them in the black.

I think I just figured out the solution to global warming issue. We need to eliminate the USPS. Consider the fuel saving and all the trees saved. :P

Joking aside the USPS is aging dinosaur, they have had a major deficit for the last decade or so and it's only getting worse. The internet is killing it as people and companies move to electronic communication and probably even more importantly advertising dollars are spent elsewhere.

It goes both ways - while there is a reduction in personal letters there's also an increase in parcel traffic due to e-commerce. Unlike UPS, Fedex, etc they get hit harder by fuel cost spikes since they can't change rates w/o a lengthy process.

You would think junk mail would be decreasing but the PO box here is constantly stuffed. 90%+ of the daily mail goes straight in the recycle bin at the PO. It's a complete waste of resources that we subsidize every time we send a letter or package thru the mail.

Don`t forget the USPS has kind of an unfair advantage as they don`t pay taxes & had a huge system already set in place with tax dollars. Around here only the rural areas get mail delivery, all the town people go to the post office for their mail.

There is some talk about the USPS closing some of the small rural post offices to save money, that didn't go over well here.

Its like most businesses gov. or private but even worse gov. they get loaded down with human waste. A whole bunch of really self important people get into position that control their own compasation & then they in turn hire more people with relative ability most of which don`t have any real job so they sit around & dream up so-called work junkets to go on & then USPS came up with the idea of houseing for the really important people as a perk. Probably expense accounts that are unaccountable & then they have to hire even more to do what they should be doing but nobody smart enough to figure out whats going on. Its a vicious cycle that clearly must be highly infectious.

Here's a little tidbit about the Postal Service I didn't know, no wonder they can't operate right.

So now we have another increase on the way & you can just about bank on service cuts as well.

I received a Fed Ex package yesterday that came by US Mail. I don't know how, but fed ex is using the US Mail to deliver some of their packages. It's called "FedEx Smart Post". A shipped pays fedex to take packages to the US post office and mail them as it's cheaper than shipping regular fed ex!

Fedex delivers packages to the local post office. So does UPS. Was it to a P.O. Box by chance?

That's a deal FedEx and the USPS entered into a few years back. I believe FedEx pays for each package delivered. It helps both. USPS is already delivering to the address and the customer thinks FedEx delivered it.
