WASHINGTON – Bowing to Republican pressure, President Barack Obama's administration signaled on Sunday it is ready to abandon the idea of giving Americans the option of government-run insurance as part of a new health care system.

Facing mounting opposition to the overhaul, administration officials left open the chance for a compromise with Republicans that would include health insurance cooperatives instead of a government-run plan. Such a concession probably would enrage Obama's liberal supporters but could deliver a much-needed victory on a top domestic priority opposed by GOP lawmakers.

Now we're getting somewhere....

Thats whats supposed to happen, people discuss the good & bad, what they would like to see & then try & compromise. Don`t need all the screaming & disruption it really doesn`t accomplish anything the main idea is to get a bill that both houses can work with.

With $3 billion to $4 billion in initial support from the government, the co-ops would operate under a national structure with state affiliates, but independent of the government.

So, these non-profit co-ops would be in competition with private business with govm't help? Expect Fox news et al to charge their favorite Tzar is "supporting socialism with tax dollars" or similar while reading their tea leaves tomorrow.

Don't let "not for profit" fool anyone - what they don't show in profit is often made up for in waste and financial mismanagement.

Yes, BC is dominant here and that is non-profit. Lot's of controversy surrounding it to because they have a huge surplus which they have used in the past for scholarships, grants and many other things that are not directly related to the ratepayers.
