What do you mean CLEANING?

What do you mean CLEANING?

PostBy: submarines On: Wed Aug 19, 2009 8:18 am

Gentlemen,

Enjoying the summer, but looking forward to light off the stove for the winter! Getting to the point of this post, I vaccumed and brushed out my Harman MkII and dusted out my flew. Someone yesterday told me that I'm supposed to disassemble the stove completely, make up some kind of solution, scrub down everything, repaint, and oil. And that I'm supposed to replace all of the fire brick (a couple cracked). He called this end of season cleaning. :?: :?: :?:

Any thoughts?

Here is a good link to start reading about "Summerizing" your stove.
"Summer" storage- Cleaning Coal Stove
Hope this helps.

Well by doing that you can extend the life of it but personally I think that's a bit overboard unless it's in a damp area. Myself I would disassemble and clean the ash out of the flue pipes and leave them disassembled. Vacuum out as much ash as possible from inside the stove, leave all the doors open...

I would change any broken firebrick while it is down for the summer, it can save you a lot of grief. When they break, they are prone to keep breaking into smaller and smaller pieces which eventually will find their way to your grate. Needless to say, that is where the fun will stop........ cold. :)
