Back to this subject!

Long Islanders: Where do you buy your coal? Cant all be from Rella? The new Bethlehem Coal?

I did a Yellow Page search and called all listed local "Coal dealers", none of them actually sell coal locally! All are brokers of coal, exporting out of country. I called a few stove dealers and most point me to Rella for coal.

I don't have lots of land to store a trailer of coal otherwise I'd do it for sure; nor do I have the equipment to split up a trailer with three other coal burners on my block; don't see that as an option.

Bottom line is I need 3 tons of rice.
Chime in Long Islanders ! :)

With millions of people only a stones throw from one another there are only 2 guys that sell coal that I know of. There may be more.....Unless you rent a truck and buy 3 tons rice at the source you're stuck with local prices. What prices have u ben quoted?

Its not so much the prices its being limited on sources that bugs me. $285/ton and $277/ton are my quotes and thats ok; its about what I paid last year. I'll just go with it ;)

update

Went with Rella and all is well. As a matter of fact I believe this years coal is burning better and we have less dust to deal with. The Rella delivery went well, no issues. Seems like Rella's my new guy...

I would say the following. I haven't dealt with anyone other than Rella. Johnathan the son and owner, supper nice guy, Cathy the mom (if you have nothing good to say then...). Well I have nothing to say. I have been getting my coal from a friend of mine upstate. I would be interested in starting say a coal buyers group if anyone is interested. I go through about 4 tons a winter (my wife thinks the dogs need to be warm and my stove is in the wrong place in my house). But it would be smart for us to group together and buy in volume. Buy what we need as a group and I bet we could save even more. $400 a ton is just crazy. Post here even better email me at [email protected]. If I get interest I will post. If not, I am going to have to call Bethlehem, even if same price, I would by there before Rella.

We may have a new LI supplier as seen on craigslist. Baldwin. Odd, he claims 'since 1917'. Interesting list of items too. we also sell rice coal, pea coal, nut coal, stove coal and cannel coal

Drove by his location; not much of a place. No evidence of coal from the street; no rail access. He must subcontract that part of his business. He's in a residential area on an odd lot and saw mostly firewood and rock salt.

Their coal is off the street and is in the back. They have cement corals for all the coal. I'm sure they buy their coal by the truck load for around 150.00 a ton delivered and then they put in their markup.
