Considering getting a Hitzer 50-93. I see that the ash pan only has three sides. Doesn't this make a mess? How do you carry/transport without spilling ashes all over?

Do not tilt it when pulling it out or when moving it . They are made like that to act like a shovel to get the ash out of the back and sides of the ash area .Perky wrote:Considering getting a Hitzer 50-93. I see that the ash pan only has three sides. The same way you carry a shovel full of dirt, snow, etc.. People seem to think the ashes all fall out, but it doesn't. When putting the ashpan back in the stove, it again acts as a shovel, scooping ashes in the bottom of the stove. Very good design. So good, we turned a Harman ash pan into a 3 sided.

Hitzer has a mate for your 3 sided pan if you need it...
makes it a closed box on all six sides...

At first I thought it was a pretty goofy design too. After using it for over a year, I like it. No more standing on my head with a little shovel to clean out the back of the ash bin. I would however like to see a deeper version of the same thing.

Not to ask a stupid question....doesn't the ash pan cover the floor of the ash bin?
My current stove does, every couple weeks I shovel out some escaped ash - no big deal.
Live on a dirt road, where the ashes go. Need to be able to carry the pan without losing ashes everywhere.
Hey Coal Berner - you're quite the night owl!

I used to think it was a dumb design, then when I started burning a hand fed I quickly discovered that one little nugget of ash will make a four sided pan not fit back in the stove. With a three sided one that nugget simply slips into the ash pan as you slide the pan back in.

Hi Folks
I use an ash tippy http://www.tippyash.co.uk/AshCarriers.htm for collecting ash .My ashpan goes straight into it and the lid is sealed and then taken outside without ash flying back in to your face as you open your door to take it outside.

Fran....I have the 3 sided ash pan....it's not an issue...
in fact it's easy to epmty especially if emptying into an ash can....just tilt and off it goes....
For you it's really not a problem.....just carry it with 2 hands...one to carry the other to stablize.....
