The Senate voted to cut off ACORN Housing funds following the release of three videotapes that show employees of the activist group advising a "pimp" and "prostitute" on how to break the law.

The amendment, offered by Nebraska Republican Sen. Mike Johanns, passed in a vote of 83 to 7 and prohibits the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now from receiving funds from the current Transportation and Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill. It marks the third time this year Republicans tried to block the organization from federal funding.

The seven voting nay:
Burris (D-IL)
Casey (D-PA)
Durbin (D-IL)
Gillibrand (D-NY)
Leahy (D-VT)
Sanders (I-VT)
Whitehouse (D-RI)

One down, two to go. Be interesting to see where this goes in the House and WH.

It's a start.

The pressure needs to keep being applied, and be wary because any move a congress critter makes is generally in their own self interest. I'm betting they are feeling uneasy right about now and would like nothing better than for things to settle down and, well you know, "get back to normal".

Acorn only received $1.6 million dollars of federal funds this year?

That seems very low. Where are the billions that people are talking about?

ACORN Housing Corporation received $1.6 million to provide housing services to low-income communities in this fiscal year, ending Sept. 30, according to USASpending.gov, a federal government Web site for tracking government grants.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development Grants has given $8.2 million to ACORN in the years between 2003 and 2006, as well as $1.6 million to ACORN affiliates.

I believe that is the federal funding for the enterprise, it's the billions in other funding they have direct or indirect control over derived from banks and probably federal housing money where the billions comes in.

The Trillion-Dollar Bank Shakedown That Bodes Ill for Cities

Published Winter 2000

...The Clinton administration's get-tough regulatory regime mattered so crucially because bank deregulation had set off a wave of mega-mergers, including the acquisition of the Bank of America by NationsBank, BankBoston by Fleet Financial, and Bankers Trust by Deutsche Bank. Regulatory approval of such mergers depended, in part, on positive CRA ratings. "To avoid the possibility of a denied or delayed application," advises the NCRC in its deadpan tone, "lending institutions have an incentive to make formal agreements with community organizations." By intervening—even just threatening to intervene—in the CRA review process, left-wing nonprofit groups have been able to gain control over eye-popping pools of bank capital, which they in turn parcel out to individual low-income mortgage seekers. A radical group called ACORN Housing has a $760 million commitment from the Bank of New York; the Boston-based Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America has a $3-billion agreement with the Bank of America; a coalition of groups headed by New Jersey Citizen Action has a five-year, $13-billion agreement with First Union Corporation. Similar deals operate in almost every major U.S. city. Observes Tom Callahan, executive director of the Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance, which has $220 million in bank mortgage money to parcel out, "CRA is the backbone of everything we do."

In addition to providing the nonprofits with mortgage money to disburse, CRA allows those organizations to collect a fee from the banks for their services in marketing the loans. The Senate Banking Committee has estimated that, as a result of CRA, $9.5 billion so far has gone to pay for services and salaries of the nonprofit groups involved. To deal with such groups and to produce CRA compliance data for regulators, banks routinely establish separate CRA departments. A CRA consultant industry has sprung up to assist them. New financial-services firms offer to help banks that think they have a CRA problem make quick "investments" in packaged portfolios of CRA loans to get into compliance....

That's excellent article that sheds a lot of light on where we are at today, published in 2000 ;) .

Since 1994, more than $53 million in federal funds have been pumped into ACORN, and under the Obama administration, ACORN stands to receive a whopping $8.5 billion in available stimulus funds.

A fourth tape? I'm shocked.

Actually quite good news as it shows a pattern, the isolated incident argument cannot be used. I wonder if there are any others yet to be released.

Heard parts of the audio this morning, looks like Sen. Boxer and others are mentioned in the tape. I hope Acorn continues to pursue the idea of suing the under cover film makers, Fox News, Breitbart et al because it will open Pandoras box with discovery motions. It's basically run like a criminal enterprise so RICO statutes may come into play as well.

Tune in at 5 p.m. or set the DVR, show starts in 45min :D

Figures.

This is a man who got a Hispanic girl to testify against the Latin Kings and when she was murdered the day before the trial, he claimed it wasn't law enforcements job to protect the public.

And then, HOW I don't know, he got the parents to stand on stage with him and say what a great guy he was during his re-election campaign.

Don't watch Beck much as he's little too off his rocker for my tastes but I did watch this show. So now we can add what certainly sounded like murder to me to the laundry list. Guy proabaly deserved it but if as she described it sounds like murder, she's probably going to have rough couple of years....

He did make some good points though, certainly if the steroid scandal and the suggestion they investigate the Pats cheating scandal warranted an investigation this certainly does.

I'm still wondering if their are any more recordings and if so how many? Maybe there's a real whopper waiting to surface.
