WAKE UP! Get a move on! This coffee and fresh muffins will get you started.
Ohhh, what a week. After the other dog got sprayed by a skunk, we added three traps and finally got the little stinker....and his brother. They both got a dirt nap & will not be bothering us again. All four traps are still out, but no catches the last three nights so I think we'll be all set until next year. I'm not sure which was worse, the dog getting sprayed at 5AM, or the wife spilling weenies & sauce in the car. It took longer to clean the car & it may always smell a bit Italian.
Chilly nights, cool days. I'm hoping to test a Jotul tomorrow. Today headed to the great north Maine woods to take some firewood to north camp and also deliver a sign. Road trip! A buddy is going with me. I'm sure we'll get into some mischief along the way. Maybe find a new coal stove at a yard sale?
Hope you all have a good weekend. It's getting so we should all be ready with our yearly match. One by one we will be lighting up our coal devices for the season. I'm thinking another 3 or 4 weeks, but then again, I'm hoping for an 8 week Indian summer. It can start anytime now!

Good morning Freddy,
I always look forward to the smell of muffins and coffee. Today is supposed to be another gorgous fall weekend around here. It's still not close to time to even be thinking of lighting that match though. My husband knows that I will be getting anxious so he hide the lighters and matches some where safe. I expect that he'll give them back in a month or two. Yeah, I said a month or two. We usually run the whole house furnance for a week to ten days to take the chill off before we really need the stove. Historically, that's been around Thanksgiving. I keep telling him that I do need to cure the paint before then but he is being stubborn. I'm sure he has a business trip coming up and the 7/11 always has matches.... We'll see.
Today starts crunch time for the VA governor's election and the majority of the house of delagates. I'll be out knocking on doors and making calls trying to make a difference for the good. I encourage everyone to call or write their Congressional Representatives with their opinion of how things are going. Speak up now or forever hold your peace. Take care, enjoy your day trip. Lisa

Good morning everyone. I almost hit a skunk this morning taking Mama to work. It's very cool this morning here in S.E. Pa. only 53. I am chomping on the bit wanting to light the Harman Mark III. Well tonight it will be in the upper 40's so mabey I will try my new way to light a hand fired using only coal and kerosene. Already had a cup of Wawa coffee black with a little ice to take away the heat. Have a nice day everyone, and enjoy the last weekend of summer.
Good morning ! The coffee is good. Ovaltine for the kids. We are toasty and warm this morning, as I fired up the DVC-500 yesterday and it idled all night I just HAD to "Test" it It dropped to 50F outside, last nite, but I still had to open windows when the inside temp got up to 77F.
Freddy, in your neck of the woods, wasn't the act of going out to get firewood called "cutting Brush"?
Keep those traps set, There are still more critters. This year, my one trap in the chicken coop has caught 14 possum, 4 or 5 raccoon, a couple feral cats, CROWS , but I was amazed no skunks. We have them around here, but haven't seen any this summer. Yep, our dog likes to "play tag" with them too.
Time to get outside and get some chores done.

What do you bait with to catch possum or skunk? The poison I have left out for them has simply been a treat.
Skunk in a live trap or ??? Oh I cannot imagine the stink off of that.

Yep, Live Trap. I use rotton chicken parts. The more maggots there are, the better.Sting wrote:What do you bait with to catch possum or skunk? The poison I have left out for them has simply been a treat.

I would never use poison, If the skunk crawls under your house to die, it will be fun!

Here's a funny tid bit for ya. My friend had a skunk family living under his deck. Someone told him to put moth balls in and around the hole because they don't like the smell. It worked! Can you imagine a skunk not liking the smell of something?
I keep a bag of mothballs behind the instrument cluster on my tractor. Keeps the mice out. Mice don't like the smell, either.mr1precision wrote:Here's a funny tid bit for ya. Record low of 41 this morning. I still have no desire to fire up. Too depressing. Burning Yamalube is MUCH more enjoyable for me! Yet another summer gone in a flash! Still gotta get oil & scrub my HW coils clean .... I hate winter..... I did get my coal delivery though. Trying to figure out how I can buy a flatbed & a Moffit. I figure, if I start saving now, I should have one by 2078! Provided I'm still alive, of course.
Yeah, moth balls are alot cheaper than air filters, I can tell you that! I usually put out 2 cases of De-Con that get chowed down in 3 days! Then I find the little green pellets in every airbox of my bikes .... sometimes next to a body or two. Then I "smell" them in the walls of my house, barn etc... Naasty!
Hoping it warms up today. I've got 2 quarts of Yamalube to burn!

36 here at 06:00, but up to 75 today. The Nascar Group is swilling the Java by the tanker load, and 500,000 blueberry muffins were shipped from the Dunkin Donuts Kitchen across the border. Naturally the PeterBuilt Tractor and the 54' air ride TT unit has a State Police escort. It arrived in Loudon's NHMS at 05:30!
Hey, ever wonder who is the SOB that goes out harvesting Moth Balls? Ouch!
Some Fish and Game Officer spotted a mountain lion/ cougar out in the boonies in NH yesterday and already it is Area 51! ....must be an illegally released pet, blah, blah, blah. Never happened....
I did hear that a new 'Wild Creature CZAR' and a staff of 25,000 environmentalists has been set up AND they have a preliminary budget of 575 Million to study the problem to see if it is an issue related to Global Warming. Toyota Prius is the 'Official Tracking Vehicle' for the new agency.
You do not want to poison the varmints unless you can get the creature easily when the 'even' happens. A few folks have foxes living in old barns, raccoons, possum, porcupines, red and gray squirrels.....on and on. They do munch on wood pellet bags, but seem to dislike the black rocks(duh!)
It's a great fall day, "Just do it!" as they say. Do something nice for your family and friends, and if you have enough time, even yourself.

ok
I have to ask
How do you extricate a skunk from a live trap?
Possum -- well a 22 should do the trick followed with a shallow hole -- but the Skunk???
Do you just rope the trap and drag the whole business to a hole and cover? -- expensive loss of a trap - Not?
