Being a machinist today is much different than when I first started in the trade. Today alomst every shop is loaded with CNC machines. They are programmed with CAD CAM software (we use MasterCam) with solid modeling capability which transmits G code wireless to the machine. Tolerances and shapes that would be alomst impossible then are now pretty straight forward and easy to obtain. Around here CNC Machinists make from $25-$32 an hr plus overtime. In our shop ALL the machinists program set-up and run off their jobs. I think what has helped us is that we specialize in prototypes and light run production. Any shop that depends on high production is in deep doo doo.

That's what I do now. If I get a job with 4+ pieces, that's a big order.

But we also have an M.E. writing programs to do similar parts on a high production basis for Mexico.

There's no reason that couldn't be done for my job too.

Throw a little interest rate and currency manipulation so it's cheaper to ship the raw materials to China, make the parts, and ship them back for less than you can make them here and the execution of the American manufacturing base if complete!

When Jesus was asked how to detect false prophets he said you could know them from their works.

If we look at the works of our expert economists it is pretty hard not to conclude they are false prophets. An arrogance cloaked in profound ignorance.

Once upon a time this country led the word in production and the technology that made it possible.

Today that technology is exported.

Wasn't it Lenin who remarked that they would hang the western country's and that the west would supply the rope?

Don't think those "experts" are "ignorant" by any stretch. What has been done was very carefully plotted to produce the desired result.

Check that.

Went to order my Friday sandwich today and the place is out of business.

It's OK though. Bernanke and Obama said the recession is over.

And the crazy part is, some people BELIEVE them!

Jeff, they also said that recovery wouldn`t be quick & there still would be jobs & businesses closing but that the worst was over, some areas will improve others won`t. At least they aren`t saying that the economy is fundamentally strong, I got tired of hearing that one. I was dierctly involved in the 80s recession & was basically out of steady work for almost 10 years in the Pittsburgh area while other parts of the country were working good or never had much trouble at all. This one is a lot different because its more widespread due to the global economy & the fact that we had so little work to begin with, IMO this has been coming for a long time.
