Almost all coal yards years ago had rail service. The cars rolled above
the bins and had drop bottom gates. A rail car full of coal is a lot of coal.
As coal went out of fashion, the coal yards turned to trucks for smaller
amounts of coal. The rail service dried up, and there you have it. Progress.

I talked with a coal dealer south of here. I know RR tracks go close by him so asked why he didn't use rail. His answer: " I looked into it, but by the time I got it from the RR to here, it was more expensive".

That being said.... I heard rumor last year that someone was thinking of barging coal up the river to Bangor....but that rumor was when oil was sky high. I've heard nothing since.

I have friends who live in Birdsboro, PA. Almost every time I go ti visit them there is a very long freight train carrying coal going through their town. I am pretty sure it is delivering to a coal fired power plant. Nevertheless, the thoughts I have about that coal ... :-)

The geographic location of New Hampshire is too far away to
make coal an economical fuel. We were talking about using
a Choo Choo to get coal to your area.

Anyways...I think its kind of sad that we have done away with the rail system. We still do have trains that go trough our state though and it sucks to get stuck at a rr crossing when youre late but i have no idea what they carry.

Amtrack is busy with the passenger service to Portland, ME.......Freight to Maine, some coal to PSNH in Bow,(OK lots of Coal) other general freight. Ever wonder why RR bridges that carry hundreds or tons for 150 years never crap out, but an Interstate bridge can't go thirty years; most only 20 yrs. Yes, I know about the bridge formula...make the damned things rugged enough to last more than couple decades!

As a kid in the early 70's we lived in Califon, NJ. Had a rail line running thru the center of town. Every day we would see at least one train hauling dozens of coal cars (counted 200 on one train, one time!) You could kinda guess how many cars were in each train by how many deisel engines they had linked together. Shortly after a derailment in town, they shut that line down permanently.
