I would like to get an idea on clearances without having to call the code officer yet.
The brick wall behind the stove is the chimney. Actually it's the wall behind the dining room fireplace. No combustibles behind the bricks. As it sits the stove pipe would run up the wall about 1 inch away from the brick. If I have to move it away from the wall I would have to rebuild the kitchen island that sits in front of the stove.
Any input would be appreciated.

The flue runs to where?
The island is 36" from the front of the stove?
Nothing else closer than 36" besides the 2 solid brick walls?
That side wall looks just to be brick faced, if so you need an air gap behind them.
That wood holding the switch and outlet...
More than 36" if not needs a heat shield.

Hope that helped :)

Did you check on line for your county code on clearance requirements? I know when we were installing our stove all the information was there so we didn't have to speak to a human until we were ready for the actual inspection. It sure made our life easier. If that's not available, check out "Chimney Building Codes and Chimney, Flue, and Appliance Venting Standards NFPA #211-3.1 - Specific to chimneys, fireplaces, vents and solid fuel burning appliances." That's the guide that most municipalities use. Some counties like mine take it even further but this as a starting point. Good luck, Lisa

The chimney widens out on the second floor with a second flue. the stove pipe will run through the ceiling to the second floor flue. there is only 31 in. to the island. Looks like it will have to be shortened. I will definitely need a heat shield for the wood molding or move the wall on the left altogether. it is just a pantry wall. I can downsize the pantry no problem, it is a large walk in. Looks like I'll be doing some remodeling this winter. I'll have to look on line to find more specific county codes before making major renovations. Don't want to bring it to any officials attention just yet. Not big on regulation, but big on safety. Thanks for the reply's.

Each inspector is different and has their unique spin on what is important to look for.
The stove maker will have a required setback to combustibles listed on their UL rating plate or in their owner’s manual.
Now I doubt there is a UL rating plate on your stove...
There may be a printed manual that lists setbacks if you are lucky.
This will get you started...

Current book is the 2006 edition.

But new version is out this fall, 2009.
