Supposedly there is a coal dealer in the Cherry Valley area just off of route 20 where the price is right. I'm also told they are Amish and don't deliver although having lived in Amish country I know most will contract delivery out if the business is good enough. Don't know if that is closer to West Winfield than Madison. I pass through all of them on my way to visit my family in CNY so I would think I should

Dan here from Tully (Exit 14 off 81, 25 minutes South of Syracuse) 2nd year heating 2200+ sqft Colonial with a Keystoker 90 plumbed into my existing ductwork. Bagging my rice from either Dennis Coal & Stove where I bought the Keystoker or Woodford Brothers in Apulia Station - both are charging $220/ton for 2009-2010. Estimated usage 3 1/2 to 4 Tons. Trying to get away from bagging it if someone can find me a Little Giant gravity bin w/ running gear I can store it in. They have the smallest capacity I can find and have a galvanized body that will last.

4th season burning rice in my Yellow Flame stoker warm-air system, with progressively happier results. I'm heating my whole house for 1/3 the fuel cost of the 23 baseboard zones the place was built with, altogether likely less than 1/2, even with blower power factored in.

Can even leave it alone for nigh onto 60 hrs in the coldest weather. And, if my "wife's-cat-on-the-treadmill" idea works out, maybe longer....

Hello fellow NYers! I am Rebecca and this is my second year burning coal in Ithaca. After a very frustrating start last year I've been thrilled with the heat that my little Saey throws out and the cost savings has been unbelievable. I had 3 ton delivered last fall and I am still working off of that first delivery! I am heating a 1000 sq. ft. ranch and was hot most of the winter last year - something I never said when running my LP boiler! I owe a lot to the wisdom on this forum - if it weren't for the help I found here last year, the stove would have been chucked out the window. :~)

North shore Suffolk county here. I've had a Crane 404 since 1982 as a supplemental heat source. About 20 years ago we added a small round Scotia stove in another room that had no other heat source. We replaced the Scotia with a Harman Mark I about 10 years ago. About 5 years ago we ran baseboard into that room and got lazy and basically stopped burning coal. Now that the price of oil is up, last winter we started using coal again. I still have a bin with about 2 ton of nut so I don't need to buy any this year.

Back in the 70's when the first crisis hit, I had friends that burned wood and others than burned coal. When I'd meet them at work in Manhattan you could tell who burned wood by the smell on their clothes. That's why I went right to coal in 1982 when I went shopping for the first stove. With the unheated 'porch' room, we had to burn coal through the entire heating season; it was a pain in the butt, but we took only 1 delivery of coal (2-3 ton) and 1 delivery of oil (400-500 gal) for the entire year.

Installed my Keystoker KAA-2 last year and burned all last season. Just fired it up last weekend to start this season.

Monroe, NY. (Darned close to stockingfull.) I'm just a bit south and west of West Point. I have an old Glenwood base burner and a Vermont castings Resolute. I'm working on getting my oil furnace air handler to distribute the coal heat throughout the house. I've only been in this house one winter, but I've burned coal on and off for many years.

Good to hear from all the New Yorkers, this is my forth season heating with coal. We have a Keystone Koker that will use five ton of Buckwheat to heat a 2000 sq. ft. two story home. This year I am trying out Rice coal, my friend got a deal on, so I wanted to give it a try. We really enjoy the warmth from the coal, much nicer than the propane. (and cheaper) I have the stove in the basement and plumbed into my existing ductwork. I would like to get a hot water coil hooked into the system at some point. To day was a bad day to be from NY and watch all three football teams lose, oh well, there's always next year.
