That's about some nasty looking coal !
Looks like all different sizes and cement dusty.
If it burns, that's all that matters.

Yeah that was the nasty coal! I agree it looks terrible. This was all the old coal that was here in the house from the 1950s when the original coal furnace was torn out. I was too cheap to waste it, so I burned it up even though it was nearly too big for the auguer. Within 2 weeks it was gone, and then I switched to my proper pea coal .. nice shiny, consistent nuggets from N&B coal in Northampton PA.

Is the auger stock from AHS or of your own supply.
How well did it handle the bigger stuff?

Good question - I don't know what breaker they get the coal from actually. I burn Pea size from N&B. I do know that the coal snap crackle pops in the fire though. And I don't seem to be producing what I would call excess clinkers or other waste. It does burn with a pretty decent sulphur smell outside the chimney though. I tried several places in the lehigh valley last november when I finished up my installation - and by then several either wouldn't deliver to riegelsville or already had enough customers apparently (ie no returned calls, etc). So I ended up with N&B by default because their price was in the middle of reasonable and they delivered next day. I stuck with them because their deliveries are very reliable and usually next day. "No hassle" counts for a lot with me even if the coal might be lacking in some minor way.

I agree your design looks great, looks like you did your homework. My first thought was that is nasty coal. I thought will that burn? I am glad I am not the only member looking at it that way. I am glad you got free coal, for years I was given coal from many sources with mixed results. :o Last year was my last batch of free coal, it burned great! I wish all free coal burned as well. now I have a stoker requiring rice I believe my free coal days are over :x

I missed the question about the auger - it came from AHS .. and it mostly ground up the big stuff into dust and jammed THAT into the hopper. LOL So for strength of the motor you can't go wrong.
