I was contacted in regards to some free coal. I was told it is 30 years old. I know the coal wont go bad, but was there anthracite rice 30 years ago? Or is some prob pea coal or some other type?

George

Age shouldn't matter, coal is millions of years old.

As the old saying goes....Size Does Matter....
SIZE is the important thing depending on what you are using it in. If Rice or Buckwheat, should work in "most" stokers...larger or smaller may not.

Free coal is free coal. Even if it burns poorly, it will still
deliver free BTUs. If it's easy to get to, I'd get it.

Well it was worth the trip. There are some large pieces, and 2 or 3 giants (like almost tennis ball size) but 95% of it is rice size and burns well in the LL.

Now to get it out of the cellar its in and get it home. Will have to be hosed down a few times,a lot of dust and stuff but its been sitting there a long time.

No switch, the DVC is running great. The LL was a Craigslist purchase for a great price. I restored it and have in the garage. It's heating the Garage and the breeze way that attaches it to the house. I fell for the coal hobby a lil hard, lol. I can grab a few beers and work in the garage and watch that stove run.

I enjoy the stove a lot. :D

The coal stoker in the house I grew up in was installed in the early 50’s and it has always burned rice.

About 15 years ago, I cleaned out a few coal bins hoping to sprinkle the rice onto my wood fire to extend the burn overnight. It didn't work well, so it sat in drums outside.

Yesterday, I sifted about a ton of rice in those drums and put it into my new coal bin at efm. I'll find out Monday if I made a mistake.

If it isn't old, it isn't anthracite. About 300 million years is the vintage for good coal. :)

I bought about 8 tons of nut 2 years ago that was sitting 10-15 years, turned out to be the best coal I ever burned.
