where to buy coal

I am looking for a good place to buy nut and pea anthracite in the columbia city, IN area?

I've been looking in the Minneapolis St Paul area. I live just east of the twin cities and so far I haven't found a coal source bit or anthracite. That said there are train loads that come in from the west for power plants and up the Mississippi for power plants all bit coal. I've called local stove dealers and have come up empty. I've called coal listings on yellow.com and get no replies. I'm still looking for coal sources in western WI or Minneapolis St. Paul area. I think I have seen posts on the board that lead me to believe there are coal sources in the area but noting specific.
If anyone happens to see this note and has leads please let me know.

Hi guys,

I don't know of any place to buy coal in your area but wanted to give you something to think about. Some of the guys in Maine and Michigan, the farest away from the NEPA buy complete truck fulls - 24tons or more - and then don't have to worry about it again for several years. Of course the feasibilty of doing this would all come down to the transportation cost. Like I said, it's something to think about. I vaguely remember reading a posting about a coal source in Wisconsin. Maybe an archives check can give you a name. There is a posting on the forum now for a deliverer goes out of state. Thanks coal burner. I'll follow up on these I've been continuing to contact folks locally with out much luck. Found one a fellow that halls bit stoker coal in from KY 1 1/4" used in local elec coal plants but has no way to break up load or sizing. Don't know if that would be of any use. Another fellow quite a ways west of here brought in a truck load of anthracite for his use. Sort of surprised I haven't found any dealers in the Minneapolis St. Paul area thus far.

Thanks Mikey, I'm gonna keep this in mind.

what are you trying to burn coal in? If you're looking at a long-term cost saving heating option, you're far enough west that anthracite will likely not be very competative. A bituminous stoker or hand-fired stove may be a much more cost-effective option for you, especially since you've already found someone hauling KY stoker coal.

This is Mikee I'm at fllymike@hotmail.com. I was looking for anthracite in western WI or Minneapolis St Paul area which appears to be in very short supply and at high cost. You had mentioned that since there is some bituminous coal coming into the area I should consider that. I quite agree as it may be cheaper etc. That said I haven't found a sound source for the stoker coal. I see it coming in for the west on trains for power plants and I know KY coal is brought in by barge because I have spoken with those folks. So far I haven't confirmed a good solid source for the stoker coal though I'm still working on it. Has a lot to do with buying a few tons vs a semi truck load etc.
I have a good acquaintance in logistics so I'm researching the costs of bringing in coal from PA or as far west as possible to cut the distance. It appears as you elude to that I may be best off pursuing the stoker coal route. If that were the case what stove makes should I be looking at?? I'm willing to make the investment in a new stove if it makes some sense. Any leads or advice would be appreciated a great deal as well as any advice about Bituminous burning.

Thanks casino. I tried Alpha earlier. He might be open to 24 tons at a crack but isn't set up to do it. Reiss has closed its office. There is coal here but still haven't found a good source. I would consider 24 tons but don't have a place to put it.

Where are you located? You can get bagged Blaschak coal here in SE MN for $280/ton any size and had I ordered it earlier for $250/ton. I picked up 6 pallets (7.2 tons) in July and when all said and done with picking up, worked out to about $288/ton because I had to make two trips. Even at those prices coal is still the most cost effective home heating option in our area. I have a Harman DVC 500 that I'm going to fire up this weekend.

As an aside-when I was researching stoves and coal sources I found that there weren't many sources listed in MN or western WI and then found this site(an excellent source of information by the way! ). I've learned a lot from the people posting on this forum which helped me select my first stoker. I've been watching this site for almost three years and until recently haven't posted anything.

I would also like to try to get a buying club or some other arrangement to reduce the costs even more if other coal burners in the SE MN and western WI areas are interested in getting something started.......
