Obama signs major Pakistan aid bill

PostBy: Wood'nCoal On: Fri Oct 16, 2009 8:19 am

President Barack Obama on Thursday signed into law a $7.5 billion aid package for Pakistan that the U.S.-ally's military criticized as American meddling in its internal affairs.

The White House said the law, which was passed unanimously by Congress, is "the tangible manifestation of broad support for Pakistan in the U.S."

Give money to a country that harbors terrorists, what a great idea. What could be done with $7.5 million here? Pakistan doesn't even want it!

Hopefully it won't be in cash like the aid we gave Pakistan during the Bush adminstration.

In fact, however, a considerable amount of the money the U.S. gives to Pakistan is administered not through U.S. agencies or joint U.S.-Pakistani programs. Instead, the U.S. gives Musharraf's government about $200 million annually and his military $100 million monthly in the form of direct cash transfers.

Was it packed in suitcases? :D Or just overstuffed envelopes?
I noted that the bill was passed
unanimously by Congress
I haven't seen the vote count.
I'm not criticizing the Obama administration, I'm just pointing out what I consider money that can be better spent here. I would have criticized the issue you brought up as well when it was current.
I don't think posting something negative about Bush every time a negative post about the current government is made constitutes a "thoughtful and intellegent" debate. How about discussing the reasons for the bill?

This wasn't sarcasm? It sounds like critical sarcasm.

Give money to a country that harbors terrorists, what a great idea.

My biggest problem with the Obama administration is the fact that they're doing exactly the same things (that didn't work) as the Bush administration. Despite what the deluded paranoids are saying Obama is continuing along in exactly the same direction as Bush. Health care is an extension of Bush's drug program. The war on terror is being prosecuted in pretty much the same way. All the TARP and big bailouts of failing industries were started under the Bush administration.

But every time the Obama administration does something, even if it was precisely the same thing as the Bush administration did, the loons come out and cry socialism or marxism.

Based on policies, Bush was just as much a marxist as Obama because their policies pare pretty much identical.

" the new boss is the same as the old boss......" I agree 100%, I personally have grown tired of the discourse that
passes for political debate in this country. Lots of finger pointing, teeth mashing, name calling....to what end? They are
ALL THE SAME.

Maybe a little sarcastic, I admit.

But isn't the idea of giving the money to Pakistan a little bit odd, regardless of who is responsible for the idea? Seems like paying them off to behave the way I see it.

Seems like something we can't afford to do right now:

Federal Deficit Reaches All-Time High of $1.42 Trillion

Government spending last year jumped to $3.52 trillion, up 18.2 percent over 2008. The $700 billion financial bailout fund and increased spending and tax relief from the $787 billion economic stimulus program that Obama pushed through Congress in February drove the increase
