Small Stove to Fit Inside Fireplace?
I have a fireplace opening that is 20" deep at the bottom, 16" at the top, front is 34 wide by 29 tall, the rear narrows to 26" wide. My problem is I need a stove that cannot stick out past my opening because of my small hearth. A mat or extending the hearth is not an option. Any ideas on what may fit? All the inserts partially sit onto the hearth, may wood inserts are the same. I realize I will loose radiant energy this way.

I have never seen a coal insert with a flush front panel, however I know that Jotul makes the C550 Rockport insert, and Lopi makes the Declaration, both of which are flush faced, so you likely would not have to extend your hearth. Avalon and Lopi are both the same company, Travis Industries, and they make a version of the Declaration... same stove, different look. As these are all wood inserts, you would not be able to burn coal in them. You'll have to check exact sizes to see if they'll fit... the Rockport is quite large, as I recall. I run a Jotul Kennebec insert here in the living room, load it 3 times per day, clean out ashes once per week, and burn 2 cord a year running 24/7 from December 1 through February 28. That should decrease this year with the new Keystoker 90.

I took the legs off my Harman MkI to fit it in my stove. I got one of those wool carpets to put over the rug in front. I think this is as flush as you're likely to get. The outlet is going to be the problem.

Have you looked at any of the coal inserts instead of a stove There are a few small stoves out there that might fit in there Keystoker makes a bay window stove and insert Gibraltar also made two models of coal inserts CFI & DDITouring wrote:I have a fireplace opening that is 20" deep at the bottom, 16" at the top, front is 34 wide by 29 tall, the rear narrows to 26" wide. The problem with the inserts is they stick out too far. Then I have problems with my hearth depth. The Hitzer would be my first choice but it won't fit. The Keystoker may work if it could be recessed but I haven't been able to find better specs on it. All the wood stoves that will work have small fireboxes. It seems I can't win with any. I may just get a cheap wood insert and see how much I hate it.

Yep, that's the conundrum. Burying a little Moreso stove in there might be an idea, I forgot about those. The problem with little wood stoves and inserts is that you have to feed them often. My Jotul needs to be fed every 8 hours... I can go 12-14 without restarting a fire, but no real heat output after 9 hours or so. Smaller wood stoves need to be fed every 6 hours, which makes sleeping through the night tough.

A used Russo may do the trick...
I will take some picks and measurements...
I think it is a top exit also.

I had the same exact problem with my fireplace and ended up going with the quadrafire 2700i which is an insert which fits flush and does not stick out into the room.....However, it is a wood burning insert, not coal....And like the previous person said, they are so small that the max. burn time is about 6 hours for heat so its tough to make it through the night.....So, I have a efm 520 coal stoker for the winter but use the quadrafire for cool mornings in early fall and early spring when the 520 isn't running.....
