Hi, Dice here.

We are in central MA, used to have a Surdiac, now replacing it with a new coal stove.
We seek the community's advice.

We looked at Saey 92 and Hitzer 30-95. Which is better?
We have only a little experience with coal.

The house is about 1,500 sq ft.
The stove is going in the finished basement.

Many thanks,
Dice

I've run Saey stoves for about ten years. Hanover I and II.
They are good stoves. Castings are strong and durable.
Don't know about the Hitzer products, but I think you'll be
fine with either stove.
I replaced one of the Saey stoves with a Leisure Line Pioneer last
year. Love the stoker, but the hum of the motors takes some getting used to.
The hand fed stoves are quiet except for the shaking.

Hitzer
Hopper fed from the top...
The 'rents have a 503 insert and love the hoper feed...
When I bought my new stove I went with a hopper fed DS Machine Stove Basement #4...
Gotta love just pouring in the coal!
Shoveling in coal is not that bad, but if you don't have to...

How long does takes to cure new coal stove?

We have been using our new Hitzer 30-95 for a couple days now, but there is still an unpleasant smell.
Is that something to be concerned about?

Many thanks,
Dice

To those on this forum, that is not an unpleasant smell.
It's like gun powder to a Marine. It's like manure to a Farmer.
It's like........you get the picture. A few days and it's gone.
Then you'll miss it.

Take the stove body temps up 100* per day...
5 days till ya hit 500* should be gone...
Open some windows a crack...
You do have a CO detector...
