These new positions are specifically for the states, I'm hoping the new moderators will spur some local discussion. ;)

Hey Terry, how many coal mines in MD?

How was the fluke fishing this past fall off of the beach?
Do you plug for stripers from the surf in MD?
Do you ever wreck fish for Tog?

There used to be coal mines in western Maryland but they are all shut down. I had a very busy year with my busniness and didn't get much time for fishing etc. I did take off 4 days to go crabbing at various times throughout the late summer.

Gents,

I've read here that all mines are shut down in Western Maryland. Not so.

There are a good number of working mine sites here, in both westernmost counties. Some small, some fairly large operations. I don't have a number, but trucks run daily to power plants in the area. There are power plants at Cumberland, Williamsport, and one near Frederick, iirc, as well as a big plant at Mt. Storm WV [burns 15,000 tons per day], and a power plant at the paper mill here [burns as much as 1000-1200 tons per day]. I would be surprised if there are not several hundred folks making their living from coal here.

Hi Dave. Thanks for that info. I had no idea they were still active. Are they surface mines or underground type?
By the way I was in Cumberland last fall. Camped at Rocky Gap, rode the scenic Western Maryland Railroad, visited Frostburg State where my wife went to college in '72. It's really beautiful out there.
