how can you tell the difference between anthracite and bituminous coal?

Some correct me if I'm wrong.....

Pick up a handful...rub it with your hands. Now wash your hands, If they are clean in 1 to 5 seconds, it's anthracite. If after 5 minutes you're reaching for more soap, it's bituminous.

Don't know about eastern soft coal but if you handle Utah coal, hands wash off in seconds.

After volatiles burn off (20-30 minutes for Utah coal), that piece of soft coal would look/burn similar to the hard coal, blue flame and all..
Utah coal doesn't swell/cake together etc. so after volatiles are gone it looks very similar to the photos of burning hard coal many members use for their avatars.

Here is a photo of Utah soft coal burning in my stove after volatiles are gone.

Yeah, go ahead and rub it in, while I sit here looking at my cold stove. Wishing I had a chimney that worked, yada yada yada... :lol:

I know what you mean, I went without I stove for a few years. :mad:
When you get there you will appreciate the heat even more :)

Aww man, thats a terrible feeling!! I kinda felt like that when It started to get cold out and I didnt get my coal yet!!
