Sis in law just bought a new laptop that came with Windows 7 Premium. She lives in the sticks right at the base of the hill. She uses dial up for her internet connection. Can't get Sat. due to the hill, no cable and Dsl is not availible. Laptops for the most part do not come with a dialup modem anymore, so she bought a Zoom v.92 external USB modem. Only problem is that none of these modems are compatible with 7 yet. Called zoom and they said to install drivers for the Vista 64 bit OS. The don't know if it will work though. I did find that the modem works with 7 32 bit OS but no info availible about 64 bit. Anyway got everything up and running, installed software for the modem and took it for a test run. Computer will communicate with the modem, aol will communicate with it also. Only problem is the darn thing will not dial out. I tried everything I can think of but to no avail. I told her to take it back and swap it for another. Maybe a defective modem? The printer was a whole different adventure, but HP already has updates for her printer to run on 7. I've come to the conclusion that you shouldn't buy a machine with a new OS until it's been on the market for quite a while so you can get the updates to work with your older hardware or software. Sorry for the rant, just had to let off a bit of steam.
Has your sister-in-law got good cell phone service at home? I use cell for high speed connection and works great but the greedy @#$#$$#@#$ put a cap on usage and still call it unlimited but if you dont stream any video you will be fine
Well, I had her take the modem back and swap it for another. Got it home and hooked up and all is well. Had a defective modem. The dialer would not work. So the Zoom v.92 external USB modem will work with Windows 7 64 bit as well as the 32 bit.
I believe she is on a family share plan on her phone. So it would be draining minutes on the account. She does fine with the dial up. She only uses it for email and paying bills, maybe a litle research here and there. Thanks
